Hard Drive

My new hard drive arrived today! A 30GB 7200rpm IDE Hard Disk Drive - OEM. Just a few problems fitting it. I'd swapped it around with my old one using the same wires being told this would be ok. Anywho after turning my pc on my monitor doesn't turn on, leaving a blank screen although I can hear bleeps like it's normaly being turned on.
I was thinking it may have something to do with the jumper settings. On the front of the new hard drive it says: "J8 Jumper Settings: Single: NONE OR 4 TO 6. Master: 5 TO 6. Slave: 3 TO 4. Cable Select: 1 TO 2"
Im not sure what all of that means, athlough I do know what a jumper is and I can see where they go on the hard drive. Just where and how many do i put on to get this thing working as my main hard drive?
I've tried just setting the jumpers as the same as my old hard drive, but with no luck.
Would I need to edit the Bios at all?
Thanks for any help :D
ah yea and im using my old hard drive atm :\

if it's the only drive on an ide flat cable put it on single (i think cos all my hdd's only have a cs option which i use when it's the only one)
if you have two devices on the cable one is master , the other one is slave ( i think the one with the longest distance between the two connectors is master)

and dont forget to update the bios settings if you're not using autodetect for your devices

sounds like you have an old PC with a BIOS that can't cope with large disks

get win2k or XP

:)

well, win98 can handle large disks...

you need to specify size in the bios I think, or rather, use the bios to check the size.

my pc is pritty new using a athlon xp 1.6 around 3 month old. i replaced everything inside my PC apart from the old 6 gigger i used to have in it. i don't see why it's limiting it's self to 2 gig when it had 6gig before. i've tried setting bios settings for the hd myself but it wont boot up when i change them :( I'll try upgrading to XP tomorrow, which may be hard as i only have 500mb of free space left
hmm maybe i should format to XP :\
if that doesn't solve it tho im buggerd!
can't really go back to my old HD as it's making a very loud nasty noise when i use it, sounds like it's going to blow up, not surprising, it's around 4 year old

Hmm, I've been reading up and maybe it could be something to do with the file system. At the moment im using FAT16, I could update it to FAT32, or NTFS if i install XP. Would this help at all? Hate going into my bios and messing about with things.

Irc FAT16 limits you to 2.1 Gb of space per partition, so going to FAT32 or NTFS will increase partition size dramatically.

there's a 2gb clip/jumper on most hard drives, check if it's off

i had the same problem once when putting in a larger HD, i fixed it with a bios update, but my computer was old, if your computer is rather new i doubt that's the problem. and messing with your bios isn't something i would recommend, but if nothing else works.
maybe try winXP first but my mom uses win98 and has a 20gig HD, no problems there.

why go for 20gb, hard drives are piss cheap nowadays (and yes i'm a student myself)

Seen tons of shops selling 120gb drives for 200 euro

Eh, if it's a new drive, you can't just put it in, you have to format it, and partition it.

You boot up the PC using a a: drive boot disk which WIN98 can make for you, then partition the drive using fdisk from the a: prompt, it asks if you want large disk size 32fat, then format and woohoo!

If you connect both drives at once you can copy the whole old drive straight onto the new using a drive to drive program, you can find a little free one on softseek.com, it's about 170k and works like a dream. Just make he new one the master or remove the old one and it should boot like a dream.
