Dig out your english flag and remember the old dragon slayer, for it's St George's Day! The beer pumps are primed and ready for slaying of the liver today so be sure to mark the occasion with a good old english pint or two or more... after all the weekend is upon us.
St George most famously slayed a 'dragon' in Libya, and saved a sacrificial maiden. He distributed a reward amongst local villagers.
He held a senior post in the Roman Army, before being executed for protesting about the treatment of Christians under the rule of Emporer Dioclesian.
His popularity spread throughout Europe from the 10th Century onwards, following stories of his chivalrous actions.
