Halflife engine tweaks

Lets face it, Halflife looks horrid and it doesn't exactly complement your 1ghz+ processors and Geforce 7 Ultra Ace pro. Here are some guidelines to help put a bit of a burst of life into that old dying engine. Hopefully by the end of this your textures will look a lot crisper and your framerate will be pretty much as they were before.

First of all... command line tweaks...
Right click your Halflife shortcut.

You will need to put "+exec config.cfg" (without the "'s) at he end, sometimes i find it resets my config enless i do this.

If you want it to open Counterstrike add the cmd -game cstrike. Everyone should have -console on the line to enable the console while playing.

First of all, to make better use of all that vidio memory you have put -32bpp in. This will automatically run Halflife or the mod you choose in 32 bit colour. This will impact performance quite heavily on lower spec machines so be warned.

-nojoy will disable joystick support and will save just that little bit of extra memory

-noipx will disable ipx support so add that if you don't use ipx in your network. This will also free a little memory.

If you open servers using gamespy go to Gamespy > Games and filters then scroll to Halflife and click the gray box by Command line: HL.exe

Now just add the commands to the end of your cmd line.

---------------------------

Next open your config.cfg file in your Valve folder.

Scroll down to where it says gl_dither "1". Set this to "0" it will make your textures look a lot less blury. This also impacts performance on lower end systems.

Next find Rate xxxxxxxx
this changes the amount of info your connection will try to get from the server.

This is a rough guideline...
28.8 Modem 2500 to 3000
33.6 Modem 2900 to 3900
56k Modem/1 Channel ISDN 3600 to 5300
2 Channel ISDN 5000 to 7000
Cable Modem 5600 to 10000
xDSL, T1+ 7500 to 20000
LAN (10MBps or 100MBps) 20000

now Find cl_download_ingame "1"
You might want to keep this as 1 but i put it too 0.

Add the CVAR...
GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR to turn on trillinear filtering and improve gfx quality

If you want faster Framrates goto Fastsprites "0" and change it to "1". This will make smoke grenades look ugly but if you REALLY need a better framerate you can do this.

gl_polyoffset
I set this to 20 to stop any cutting of decals etc.

Now go to the config.cfg files in all your mod folders and do the same.

I wouldnt agree ont eh rate settings but the rest is exaclty what I have in my config.

Also try r_mirroralpha 1 to turn on mirrored textures :)

The +exec config.cfg is vital. While u can edit your cs config.cfg and write protect it, the config.cfgin your valve directoy will be rewritten right protected or not. SO do it k, or you'll lose all your gfx settings.

What else, oh yeah, connection wise on any high end connection (isdn and above) gameplay is a lot better when u turn cl_lc and cl_lw to 0.
