Half-Life The Movie? 10/26/2001 17:15 PST | Community | by redef | 11 Comments

Doug Lombardi from Valve has sent us a press release that outlines the possibility of a Half-Life movie! They’re asking for you to submit your own thoughts on the subject, read it here:

Half-Life Movie
Valve has been approached by a number of filmmakers interested in developing a Half-Life movie. Would you go see a Half-Life movie and, if so, what would you like to see in the film? (i.e. actors, story lines, etc.) To enter your opinions on the subject, even if your comments are limited to, "Yes, I'd go see a Half-Life movie," simply email your thoughts to movie@valvesoftware.com. Thanks.

w00t!

It'll be shit like most/all films based on games.

thats not true, there was streetfighter, mortal combat, mario brothers...........oh I see your point. Mind you final fantasy doesn't look too bad.

If their asking the opinion of the general public then these film makers can't have a very good budget, other wise they'd have a specialised team working on it. That means a director nobodies ever heard or and probably french, B list actors, crappy special effects and no change to the original plot ie. not new twists, no new charaters. In other words the film will be like Alien resurection.

Which actors would you use though?

Freeman - Tim Roth, maybe John Cusack. They need to be able to play a research scientest who just happens to be a crack marksman too.

G-man - ??? I'm stuck on this one. No imagination.;)

From BW newsie...

Movies from games have never really done that well. Streetfigher was, and lets be fair here, a big pile of poo. Tomb Radier had some good points but failed to captivate. Mortal Kombat was the only film that was nearly watchable. Do we really need another video game film? If you think the answer is yes and you’d like that film to be a live action depiction of Freeman escaping the Black Mesa complex, you can mail your opinions and ideas to movie@valvesoftware.com. While your waiting for Cameron to write some kick-ass script, why not visit the Duke Nukem Movie website and remind yourself of what a bad idea it all could be. Cheers to Dan 200 for the tip off.

Heyyyy!!!

If it were directed by Cameron it would be good.

I think Mark Wahlberg would make a good Freeman.
Now Sheppard I thought was a better character, he'd need a good actor who could portray a dark side, Vin Diesel or Edward Norten perhaps.
Ian Mckellen would make a good G man.
My opinion anyway.

If they're asking for public feedback then its clearly a pipedream. Thats not how it works. Valve are so shit.

Thats pretty much what I said. They were planning a movie on doom, first it was Arnie playing the part, then Bruce Willis, then it was never heard from again.

Well a doom film would be crap, the storyline grips you for about a second before the unlimited ammo, invulnerable hero, bad guys who can't aim kicked in and made the movie lame.
Half life on the other hand would be a much more interesting story, if properly written. For example, cross from Freeman to Sheppard throughout the film, add expendable characters to give that will they make it aspect. Instead of puzzle upon puzzle and endless amounts of bad guys to shoot have Freeman/Sheppard come across interesting documents and recordings as to the real goings on behind black mesa. Include subplots and give the character purpose, or background, for example Freeman seemed the loaner type of character to me, no family just a scientist wrapped up in his work, Sheppard seemed the family man in the military, trying to earn that military pension so he can retire early and spend time with his children. And at the end have the 2 characters meet and join forces to kill the giant floating baby with the open/close head.

You will be marked on spelling, punctuation, and grammer you have 1 week to complete your assignment.

The actor who plays agent smith in the matrix would be the best suited to play the gman.

You are correct. Turn to the first page of your Half-Life instruction manual and you will see a letter form the GMan to Gordan Freeman which gives you some backround info to the story, part of this letter reads "Since you are unmarried and without dependants you will be assigned appropriate living quarters". So, yes, he is a loner.

(Yes I know im sad)

Hint: Dont get a job as writing scripts, for the sake of humanity

Oh yeah sure, why not get the cancer man from the x files while were at it. How gay would that be? Getting an actor who's played one mysterious government agent to play another mysterious government agent would be like getting Sigorney Weaver to play the part of Freeman. (yes I know shes a woman and freeman's a bloke)

Yeah but still it'd be cheesy if he did it. I still think Ian Mackellen would be good for the part, (thats magneto in the x men for you lot) he has the perfect voice.

tonight i was so bored that i learned how to make proper movies from HL.

heres an avi of some para kills i made especially for it.
unfortunately i was told that i could record demos normally, then lower my resolution, and record the movie from them. but i found if i watched the demos at low res it would show a tiny part of the screen, so i was forced to record them at high res, which meant it was slow, and not very efficent.
but because i wanted it to be slow enough to see everything, i was forced to use a very low frame rate(5fps infact), with the action bits really poor due to the way HL struggles to take the stills fast enough. this is the result.
due to the way demos are whacked, the models are mussed, and it shows most of my team mates as Ts when im CT, and vice versa. it also has messed up sprites.
its poor quality, but for my first avi of online [play its ok. next time ill play with a low res if i plan to get some action for an avi.

1.8mb file, for a 25 sec avi. requires divx codec.
here you are
and yes, i know it looks like im using a hack of some kind. im not sure wether thats because of the poor quality due to the high res recording and low fps, or because im really that 1337.

edit:
since after showing my creation to some people in irc (gamesnet), one person(who ive known for a long time and is well known in the tfc community) refuses to beleave im not cheating.
here are the demos(2 demos which the kills were taken from), which to me are pretty clear. you can even hear the sounds,(i use funny custom sounds, i like my 'spam glorious spam' for when people throw grenades). this guy doesn't have cs sinstalled so refuses to watch them, and from now on refuses to talk to me. so much for making feckin hl movies :(
