A regular FreddysHouse user's girlfriend who works in the high street store Woolworths, has send word that the 1st October is pencilled in as the Half-Life 2 release date.

Its coming...

No offence to the aforementioned girlfriend, but I doubt the stores have any better idea about the release date than the general populace...

Date is courtesy of woolies, but they recieve all thier release dates from EUK, who have to let them know when it's to go on sale so they can order stock, do pre-orders etc.

The dates are usually spot on unless there are further delays - but hey it's valve and we all know what they are like for release dates!

EUK are the largest supplier of entertainment merchandise in the UK, so you can trust that they know what stock the expect and when.

HOWEVER. EUK were given a two different hl2 release dates last year, including the infamous 30th Spetmeber. And that was passed on to woolies stores as well. So that information is only as accurate as Valve's honesty.

PS, I work in Woolworths as well, so I do know what I am talking about in this matter.

Precisely. The only time we're going to get a semi-reliable release date is after the announcement comes through from Valve that HL2 has gone gold - then people will be able to start predicting when it'll be hitting the shops.

Just as a reference.

HMV 8th October http://www1.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;-1;-1;-1&sku=99336

Amazon UK, 3rd September
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00009ATWC/pd_ka_1/026-6335146-9349203

Have a search around for your favourite release date. I've seen the paperwork with the Woolies release date, but I'm sure the above companies have paperwork with the above release dates on as well.

And I just found this which makes teh whole thing even more comical.

http://www.mvc.co.uk/common/product.jhtml?pid=30032236

Now MVc are another Woolworths group company, along with EUk and Woolworths. So they get their release information from EUK as well. And they rekon the 15th of September. Heh.

edit2: The mvc website powers the woolies and streetsonline website as well, so they all list the 15th sept date :)

Well, I think it will go gold this week, and perhaps be released 30.9.2004?

Unless it gets leaked again then they'll delay it another year.

Nah, they've decided to delay release until they can bundle Team Fortress 2 and Duke Nukem 3D in a special "We're better than ID" box set ;)

What is this preload exactly? I can't see the point in downloading only a bit of it

Basically its all the game resources that wont change before release, models, textures, sounds. Its about a gig. By downloading it now, you have a small downlaod if you decide to purchase the game via Steam.

Its only worth doing if you wish to purchase it from Steam, as all you will then have to do is get an auth key and your set to play on release.

My Steam is downloading Half Life 2!!!!

Has it been released???

Its the latest, and most likely last, preload for HL2. Most people over at the hl2.net forums seem to think this is the precursor to a gold announcement.

Its a fucking huge download, probably all the maps.
