Yes, I started yesterday in Excal, Hibernia as a celt stalker. Got to level 4 in one evening and now I'm waiting eagerly to get to level 5 for ranger training. Blasted villanous youth is giving me trouble.. grrh ;)

Plan is that I'm gonna be more of a melee/pathfinding type of ranger who stealths around a bit, uses bow only for first one or two shots and then buffs himself to a melee machine with 2 blades in hand :) I have always liked hybrid chars and that's why I dont want to make a pure archer type ranger (weak) nor a pure fighter (no magic). Does this sound good or just hopeless?

Cya all in game!

You can make a melee ranger. You should probably read this guide carefully before you decide to do it:

http://udel.edu/~trevor/camelot/hibernia/guides/Ranger1.txt

But even a good ginsu ranger needs high bow. Skimping on bow skills will make leveling utter hell. No matter how high you spec your blade skill and how buffed you are, you can't deal the same kind of damage with blades as you can with a recurve bow, which is the hibbie equivalent of a railgun. Rangers can solo high level mobs without too much difficulty if, and only if, they arrive for melee doing a fair imitation of a pincushion.

Good luck!

You can spec everything high really, now that with realm abilities we don't need to spec bow to 50.

You could have 39 in bow (50 with items), 40 pathfinding (gets you the 2nd best dex/qui buff), 34 stealth (high 40s with items and RP) and 39 in whatever weapon you chose, which is still very high for an archer :)

Thanks for tips guys!

I'm very pleased to see what my bow does even with this low level. It's amazing!

I'm at level 6 now, should I spare points evenly between bow or pathfinding in the next leveling up or just concentrate in bow and get pathfinding up later?

As for melee I now have 3 in piercing and wield 2 daggers, the damage is not very good. A single crit shot with bow gives 5-10x more damage. Only problem is that it takes very long to shoot again. At least now I can have a good head start with those nasty Orchid nippers :)

I went quite high on pathfinding early on to get the buffs because I have played almost exclusively solo from 1-31. If you are planning to solo, raise pathfinding soon until you have all four buffs plus the speed burst. If you are planning to group, don't bother with pathfinding just yet, because you can get bards and druids to buff you.
