Guitar plectrums

Went into my local music shop today to have a look at getting a varied set of thicknesses, but unfortunately there were no labels to say which ones were how thick etc, therefore i'm turning to the intarweb to buy them!

Seeing as they're piss cheap, anyone recommend a thickness or a few different ones i should try out?

As a rule of thumb thick ones give a better tone but thin ones are easier to use. It doesn't make much difference really so i would just order any old one and get practicing!:touch:

i used to use various 1mm dunlop tortex picks (small tear drop mostly), but now ive fallen in love with the 3mm big stubby. if you are ordering you should probabaly order lots of different shapes and thicknesses and then figure out which one of them you like the most. dunlop picks feel mostly quite good anyway.

A lot of people are recommending JD Tortex picks (which is what I use) and they are very, very rigid even at low gauges. This is great for power-chords and soloing, but maybe not as good for a nice acoustic sound or chorused-clean tones (Knocking on Heaven's Door by G'n'R is a good example).

Try out a .60 or .73 Jim Dunlop Nylon (not Tortex) pick and see what you think...the extra flexibility in these picks gives you a more natural sounding tone (I think, anyway).

Depending on the type of stuff you're playing, you could try hybrid picking as well which uses a pick between the thumb and forefinger and then you use your other 3 fingers to pick strings. This style gives a lot of versatility when playing acoustic music (esp. folky stuff).

Just depends on what you want to play will depend on your thickness. (oO)

Thick: Deeper/Bassier sound.
Thin: Cleaner.
Middle: Inbetween the other two!

Best advice I can give you mate, is to try out several and use whichever you feel most comfortable with.

I tried these Ibanez plecs last night, they're IMMENSE!

They have a slightly rough bit where you hold it and it doesn't slip! It's incredible!

Get a sharkfin light for electric guitar dood, usually they are red and have nice grooves on the arm of it so you can chew at the strings with that nice whirly sound it gives off when you stroke it down the string. Thick guitar strings work best with 12 Stringers and bass. I use sharkfins, they are very nice tbh
