I'm awful at catagorizing music but here are some I listen to (if you're into that whole black/death/grindcore metal scene) I'm sure Shanks will correct any mistakes I make. :p

Cryptopsy, Bathtub Shitter (ignore the stupid name, they really pwn.) Nasum, Brutal Truth, Bolt Thrower, Death, Nile, Dying Fetus...Anal ****.

Well atleast you didnt do a Sharma. :eek:

Cryptopsy is technically hyperblast, which is a special form of death which involves dazzling high speeds and insane drumming(what else is new?) and it's oddly mostly canadian bands that play it. Another band playing the same style would be Kataklysm. It can be labeled as grind though, especially cryptopsy.

Nasum is my absolute favourite in the genre, they are not only swedes they also know how to slow the f**k down and find a groove and some melody instead of cranking it up to 11 and bashing it out for 30sec, not that this outfit would have any problem doing it and they do. There latest effort "Helvete" is also blessed with an unusally wellsounding production. Really infectious stuff for being the genre it is.

Bolt Thrower is death, or WAR METAL RAAAAaaHHH! A very heavy style of death, not so fast, not much melody but they have a certain charm. No Guts, No Glory is my favourite song from these guys. :D

Death is technical death. A very important band for the genre I might add. If you wanna hear Chuck's last effort before he died check out Control Denied - The Fragile Art Of Existence. He used his clean voice and played a more progressive and calmer metal. It's amazing nonetheless. RIP Chuck.

Nile is another excellent technichal death band, mixing in a egyptian theme to there lyrics. Still pretty close to ND in sound.

Overall all the bands mentioned by Mobius can be labeled grind depending on how you look on it. It's mostly awsome bands anyway. Ill fill in some:

Carcass:
The early cd's around the shift from 80's to 90's was grind and later moved into more of a death sound. Excellent music.

Abbadon Incarnate:
Loud, groovy grind from Ireland

Arsedestroyer:
The most fucked up grind band there is, gonna let that statement speak for itself.

Macabre:
Songs about massmurderers have never been as danceable

Nostromo:
Fast and Chaotic

Totalt Jävla Mörker:
Angry commies from the North. :p

Aborted:
Cannibal Corpseish song names and crazy guitar leads. Fun for everyone. Is more deathish then grind.

Guess that will keep you busy for a awhile, hope something fits your taste.

NP: Nasum - Slaves To The Grind

GRINDCORE?

My fucking god, that has to be the FUNNIEST genre name ever. Truly awful. Had never heard of it as a genre until now either, seems to be like it's one of those 'filler' genres someone's made up due to bands not quite fitting in genres. It seems metal fans are obsessed with genre: they can't let a band with different genre influences not be categorised into a genre. Very annoying.

Grindcore is what happend when people started mixing the energy and general attitude of punk with the heavier forms of death metal to make a music that's extremly fast and raw. Typical for grindcore is short songs that are really straight to the point and made so that they can be played in a row at concerts without breaks, ideal for live concerts with it's prominent rhythmic elements. The name "grind" comes from the drums insane pace which can be refered to as just grind.

As I said most grind is political but there's also grind bands that use more or less as disgusting lyrics they can think up ranging from excrement( japanese bathtub shitter) and what I earlier refered to as goregrind. Goregrind is mostly about...well gore lyrically. Aborted is an example, but there's others who are more strictly grind but they are also strictly quite shitty. I prefer the political. :p

Grindcore was created around 86 and has been around since, due to it's live nature it's probably one of the genre's that are least known and is often considered as extreme as it gets. And concerning the label grindcore, it's really needed in my opinion since it's something that's quite different then what your general band might sound like. But ill have to agree, there's alot of genrecreating wankage in metal, guess everybody wants to create there own genre.

If you are intersted in grindcore I suggest you check out Nasum - Helvete, it's easily the best of the genre to date with it's groove and alternating vocals between low growl and screams. ( Feels like im repeating myself)

Oh and speaking of genres:

Viking Metal: Metal with influences from Death, Black and some Power Metal, with both clean vocals and grunts. Melodic kind of Metal with keyboards, the speed varies from mid-pace to a fast pace. The themes usually come from Nordic and Viking mythology. ENSIFERUM and THYRFING are good examples. (Milan Elkerbout)

Stoner Rock/Metal: Building on the basis of a mix of Doom Metal and Hard Rock, but giving it an often more psychedelic edge, with heavy, slow riffing, Stoner Rock quickly began to rise in popularity. Lyrically Stoner bands often are associated (in many cases justified) with pot, getting high and generally getting stoned. Of course that is a generalization, so it is not to be awarded to all bands…
Examples: KYUSS, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, MONSTER MAGNET, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS. (Alex Melzer)

Porngrind, like I said, as vile and offensive the lyrics as possible. Guess pr0n pushes some buttons somewhere. :p

Metal Cello would be "Apocalyptica" from covering Metallica songs using only cellos fame. They have made a few cd's and luckily dont do covers only.

Those other two I have no idea what they are. :p

I agree with the above info but couldn't resist adding to it. Get the following grindcore albums, in no particular order - they will change your life:

(band,albums)

Brutal Truth, Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses;
Need To Control;
Assuck, Misery Index;
Napalm Death, Scum;
From Enslavement To Obliteration;
Death By Manipulation;
Swallowing Shit, Discography;
Infest, Discography;
Terrorizer, World Downfall;
Anal ****, I Like It When You Die;
Naked City, The Torture Garden;
Nasum, Human 2.0;
The Locust, Plague Soundscapes;
Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope.

The last band are the Pig Destroyer guys minus their drummer. The above list is pure grindcore as opposed to death metal, goregrind etc. Grindcore is the greatest music since J S Bach and renders all other forms of music obselete. It is anything but a 'filler' genre and has a history stretching back nearly 20 years. It is not to everyone's taste: more for obsessives like me! Ask an insider to make you a compilation CD for the best introduction.

Check out www.relapse.com, www.earache.com, www.terrorizer.com and www.slapaham.com for more info.

I've never heard Bathtub Shitter and am off to check them out immediately.

Enjoy!

Have their debut, "Reek of Putrefaction", and is one of my favourite extreme albums. Not so keen on their latter more comercial stuff(Heartwork).

If you like the fast stuff, then Hate Eternal's "King of all Kings" is possably my favourite album of all time, of any musical genre... The drumming is at grindish speeds, but very double-bassy. The guitar work is far more DM, but technicalish, and the vocals are some of the deepest thickest growls you'll ever hear. Far more polished than gridcore, but the result is that it's more extreme... I got it for £8 in a promotion at the start of the year. Possibly the best tenner i've ever spent.

I have one album by AnalC*nt, and i have to say that i'm not impressed. A friend gave me "Everyone Should Be Killed", and i think i've only listened to it twice. It's far too long, with most of the album being generic stopstart blastbeats/guitarnoise. But i gather they've a reputation, so maybe i've not seen the best of them. I saw one of their songs covered by a local-y type grindcore group once...

I have hardly any grindcore in my cd collection, but i would recommend Gadget - "Remote". Shit bandname, shit emo-y lyrics(can't hear them though :D). Really fast brutal music.

PS
Nostromo:
Fast and Chaotic
Saw these live with Mastadon the other month. Didn't think much of them at all. To me, they came accross as extreme metal for people who like nu metal. In other words, a bit shit :/ Crowd seem to like them though. But then again, most of the crowd were your typical rockcity trendys.

Never seen em live, and that's where it matters in this genre so. :)
