I'm thinking of getting a nvidia 8800GTS. My existing comp is a Intel P4ViiV 3GHz. Will i get the most out of the card with that chip or am i wasting money?

Well, it's better if you're running a dual-core machine with the new DX10 cards, but it's generally a high preform card anyway. It's worth buying even if you're not going to use its full potential (If you upgrade etc) - Generally wouldn't be THAT big of an issue, especially if you're using a HD screen...

Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong, as I've not looked into gfx card->pc spec differences in a while.

not sure what FSB your running but at a guess your cpu and possibly your memory will bottle neck your performance
but like Overdriven said buy one cant hurt your performance.
