I'm not particularly good with lawns. I haven't had mine long but I need to be good at things; I'm a man. Everyone else's is just grass. Mine is 90% clover and dock leaves. How do I get it to become grass ? Is there any way to make it grow slower or is every Sunday going to be given over to mowing the lawn ? :(

Help meh plz m8s !!!

Well... you'll need to get over the 'I dont want to cut it' thing Wij. Weeds get in (including clover) when your grass is weak,you need it to be strong!

Try getting a cannister of weed n feed and using that... it will kill off weeds and also fertilise the grass... read the instructions carefully and dont put toomuch on or youll end up with a patch of black :)

The key is to make big flowerbeds and also place big flowerpots in carefully chose locations. Saves you some!

the other option is to do what i did

take a flamethrower to it then (providing you have the time) relay some new turf

unfortunatly i never quite got round to the relaying stage and i need to start all over again

You could just use weedkiller on the lot, costs about a tenner for a litre or so. Leave it for a couple of weeks, buy a big bag of grass seed, some fertiliser, and away you go. Just make sure you water the entire lawn every day until its strong, and instantly remove any weeds you find along the way.

Just make sure you cut the grass short before you use the weedkiller.

Cut first, wait 4 days and then use it when grass is dry. Kid and animal safe.

My front garden was converted to cobbles / large stones / large plants and an F big water feature couple of years ago. Underneath everything is that black antiweed sheeting. Maintenance is now 3/4 times a year for about an hour each time, win.

I'm redoing the back right now. Making the lawn area smaller and the borders/patio/rockery larger. My lawn was bollocks, I was just mowing weeds. I stripped the top off the whole thing, waited for the dandelions to grow back, weedkiller, waited again, weedkiller. I think I have killed them all now but just in case there's more weedkiller going on it. Weedol, safe for pets etc, goes inert as soon as it hits soil so you can plant immediately. Nice topsoil arrives at the weekend followed by new turf.

Which leads me nicely on to a question I was going to ask. How do you calculate the area of an irregular shape. I'm assuming "Pi r 2" reversed along with "2 Pi r" reversed will work? Long time since i did geometry, before these new fangled calculators and computers :)

Easiest way is probably to measure the circumference, assume that the shape is a square, and then multiply 2 sides of the square.

Example

circumference = 30 metres
divide by 4 = 7.5 (4x7.5 = 30 metres)
7.5 x 7.5 = 56.25

area = 56.25*

*may be total bollocks

Sounds sensible to me :) and easier than my method.

Only thing is that the circumference of a circle contains the largest area so for the above example if the circumference had been a circle the area would be 71.6 sq metres.

The easiest but still accurate way would probably be to divide the shape into a series of squares, rectangles and triangles, work out their area and guess the bits left :)

Excuse my ignorance, but what difference does the shape make to its area? If a circumference is 30metres, its 30 metres if its a square, circle, triangle, or nekkid lady. Wouldn't the area be the same? Only the dimensions would be different?

Perhaps in non-Euclidian space :/

Circle has the biggest area/cirumference ratio of all all 2d shapes.

1. build a framework around the circumference of the shape.
2. use plywood to sheet the framework.
3. Line the base of the shape with thick lino
4. Fill the shape with EXACTLY 2.54 cm of water.
5. Transfer the water from the shape to a canister(s)
6. Weigh the cannisters to find the exact weight of water used (remembering to deduct the weight of cannisters)
7. youve now wasted about 2 days with fuckall to show for it :p

how "irregular" is the shape?

Kinda kidney bean/teardrop cross is one, the other is ovalish.
