graphics lag

Hi

I'm wondering if there are settings which I am not aware about which might help to improve my graphics problem. Every time im in an area with lots of players (e.g. rvr), even if I turn names off and /effects none, the whole thing judders along at what feels like 2 frames per second.
I have 1.6ghz cpu and a geforce2 graphics card. I dont have any problems with my system itself (my graphics were tweaked for fps over years, to try and get over 200 fps in quake3).
Trying to move in rvr is so frustrating that theres no point in my going outside the realm any more cos it feels like playing with a ping of over 800 or something!
I use 1024/768 cos there's just not enough room on the screen for the menus and all at a lower resolution. I play in 16bit color because I hoped this would help. Id like to use 32bit but i guess that would be asking too much.

Any advice gratefully received. Maybe I just dont appreciate the demands of this game on the graphics/cpu ? I havent upgraded since i stopped the race to keep up in q3 when i quit playing it.

Thanks

DAoC vidlags in large confrontations. There's not a lot you can do about it apart from buying a faster computer. :p
As for 32-bit, DAoC is 16-bit only so that's not really an option.

just like to point out that it is not your PC that does it

the graphics engine in DAoC is pants it redraws every thing on the screen every frame ie if you take one step the whole screen is changed or if someone else takes a step the whole screen changes (i think you get my point) so in RVR (or area's with loads of people) it sucks and blows at the same time and is crap

that is why they are bringing out the expansion with a new graphics engine in it. The ne graphics engine is apparently version 4.X and we are currently on 1.2 or something so you can understand the difference that will make.

it will also only draw stuff on to the screen that needs to be drawn and therefore make the FPS a lot faster

All 3d games do that it's how they work. There's not a lot you can do to make a moving camera in a game other than redraw everything. The problem with DAoC lies in the number of polygons in the character models, and the spell effects.
They need the character models to be swapped for lower poly versions at different distances from your viewpoint, it's not a new technique and it works well because as you get further away you can see less detail anyway. Also the spell effects are very heavy on the CPU, I'm not sure what they did but it seems pretty inefficient, especially on AE spells.

Agreed. An AE cast on a large amount of people will cause my computer to literally freeze, for several seconds. The GFX engine is crap, and we'll all be merrier once it's upgraded :)

actually not all 3D games work like that most of them leve the background in current memory and just redraw the area arround the moving polygons and the polygons themselves DAoC'S gfx engine redraws absolutely everything on the screen even the static inventry overlay< even when the chat log changes the screen is updated< so you can imagine why it slows down when there are a lot of people arround
