I'm looking to upgrade my GFX card, got any recommendations??

I've heard good things about the Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 64MB as a budget choice, but then the Geoforce 3 range is also available ??

I've read all the reviews, but it's good to get other people opinions. Anyone had problems with the Kyro II cards??

HELP!

Kyro = shite

stick to the GF range, get whichever one you can feasibly afford.

After reading other forums, I'm starting to hear horror stories about the "not so outstanding" Kyro range.

Do you have any advice on which GF to get?

What do you have Stu?

any of the gf2 based cards

hi

if u want budget good 3d gaming, go for a gf2 mx 400 64mb card. these can be o/c a bit to squeeze a bit more performance out.

if you have some money to spend then a gf3 card, such as the new asus, or the gainward gf3 based cards rule!

just remember the asus cards are always more expensive. leadtek also do some cheaper gf3 based cards. elsa are good ones too.

your choice on how much u wanna spend.

dont forget the gf2 ultras and pros are now well cheap and rip ass for the money..

I've got a GF DDR, which I got within about 2 months of them coming out. Getting on a bit now, but it runs all the games I want to run nicely. I'm getting a new puter in January probably, at which point I'll get a GF3 (or a GF3U? or GF3UA?)

Basically, depending on what games you play, any of the current Nvidia cards will do. You can pick up GF2 Ultras pretty cheap now, they seem to be the best value.

Ok the deal is I've currently got a Voodoo 3 2000 and it now sux, totally blows trying to play Black and White.

I'm looking to spend up to £250-300.

The Gainward GeForce looks like it might tear my old card a new arsehole, but I would like to go for a cheaper option if possible.

Comments??

How about an ATI Radeon? I bought a 32MB DDR, and I've been very impressed with the performance. You could get a 64MB DDR on that budget. Good for games, and best I've seen for DVD playback - just make sure you get a TV out.:D

£250-£300 should be plenty. Ironically, that will probably drop you right inbetween a GF2U and a GF3.

Scan have a Chaintech GF2U for £145 + VAT on their today only page. That's £170 inc VAT. Remember that with Nvidia cards the manufacturer is largely irrelevant - they all perform almost exactly indentically.

Dabs have (in theory) a variety of GF3s - Creative, Hercules, Elsa, and Gainward - at varying prices, but all about £310 including VAT. However they don't have any in stock, and you should never buy from a mail order company that is out of stock. Dabs is usually a pretty good indicator of price though, so the best thing to do is ring other places/check other retailers' websites to find out if anyone has any.

Which one you get is entirely up to you. Either will totally blow away your 3DFX card (my GF DDR does that, and it's 2 generations older). No games at the moment take advantage of the GF3's extra capabilities (programmable T&L for a start), so it performs almost identically to the GF2U in current apps. When stuff post-Doom 3 gets released then you will start to see a difference, but how much is debatable (also, by then, GF4 will be on the way, etc etc). Personally I would save the money, get the GF2U, and wait and see. I think it will be at least a year until the GF3 really starts pulling away from the GF2U, at which point you'll probs be close to upgrading again anyway.

I'd wait a little while to be honest. nVidia are announcing their new products very soon which should shuffle the price points of the other ones down quite a bit.

That's a bit unfair Perp - ATI make damn good gfx cards, and people should be given all the options. I like my ATI, and I like my AMD processer. They work, and they given very good bang for your buck.

Wait for Radeon 8850 and Super GF3UA 6000 SLI before purchasing. GF2u is starting to look very overpriced and will be dropped from the nVIDIA range soon. If you HAVE to buy now, get a GF2 Pro or an ATi Radeon. And ignore Perplex, the wife beating camel jackie that he is, ATi make damn fine video cards these days, and even the drivers are starting to look repectable now.

I'd wait and see for a liiiiiiiiitle while. Just what I'll be doing. Although my GF2u is fine atm :)

Jobs Done!

Alrighty

I really...no..no.....REALLY need a new GFX card, like, right now. My ancient Voodoo 3 is officially a bag of crap and needs to just die!!

So, at Stu's suggestion, a GF2u is winging it's way to me as we speak.

This gives me more cash to spend upgrading my CPU and mother board...mmmmm Athlon...mmmm 1.4Ghz..mmm.

I'll be checking out the new generation of cards next year.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice.

Cheers

Yep, got the ChainTek card. I'm currently working in Australia at the moment, but will do some benchmarks for you when I get back to UK (Sep 4th).

Notice the "Special Offers Non-withstanding" part of my post. And "Today Only" counts as a special offer. So hush lad.

True. But then as the price difference is actually about £20-£30, I guess it doesn't need to be. That's if you can actually find anywhere that sells a Pro any more.
