The GTA:VC site is now live but so severally hammered that it takes an age to get in.

More importantly, a trailer has been released.

Quicktime 480x360 (24MB)
Quicktime 320x240 (15MB)

Despite what the press say, it looks very much like a remodelled GTA3 with more vehicles (including motorbikes), larger island and more varied missions.

PS2 UK release is due to be in the UK early November and no announcements yet on the PC version, though it'll prolly be around next May if the six-month PS2 exclusivity clause is still in force. :(

Personally I can't wait to play it and pretend I'm Al Pacino in Scarface. :)

I've pasted a chunk of the changes below.
  • Nine Full hours of 80's music featuring 90+ songs licensed from well known artists (compare this to GTA3's three and a half hours). Confirmed song tracks include:
Judas Priest, "You've got another thing coming"
    GrandMaster Flash, "The Message"
    Laura Branigan, "Self Control"
Kool and the Gang, "Summer Madness"
    Flock of Seagulls, "I Ran"
Hall & Oats, "Out of Touch"
Cutting Crew, "I Just Died in Your Arms"
  • More reflective surfaces on the vehicles including real time shadowing from the environment.
  • The whole of Vice City will be open to players from the start of the game. Go where you want, when you want.
  • Vice City is not a sequel, nor is it a prequel, and it certainly isn't an addon. It's just another slice of the GTA "universe".
  • The main characters name is Tommy (read the article for the game's setup).
  • Your character finally speaks!
  • There will be around 8000 individual voice overs (compared to GTA3's 2000)
  • 20 top Hollywood stars will fill out the cast. The only person mentioned by name was Ray Liotta (Goodfellas).
  • Vice City will be double the size of Liberty City both inside and out. Yes you heard right, there will be many, many more multileveled interior environments for you explore. Missions will send to both outdoor and indoor locations.
  • Vice City will include even more peds on the streets with more lifelike behavior.
  • Gangs are more intelligent and will cause trouble all over the city so you won't be the only one the police will be hunting down.
  • Graphical enhancements include higher framerate, higher resolution textures, more complex vehicle and ped models with better skins, and a new radiosity lighting system to make the neon look just right.
  • New targeting system to make finding and shooting enemies even easier. It will highlight targets based on "priority and not on proximity". The new system also includes a new crosshair system that shows you both the exact target and the bullet spray radius. The crosshair will also change color to indicate the enemies threat level.
  • Vice City will include 40 weapons (compared to GTA3's 15), including new hand to hand weapons like the machete.
  • New maneuvers like crouching will help you make use of cover.
  • A new camera system will lock the camera over your shoulder to make both interior and exterior combat easier.
  • A new HUD will show more information including your elevation above ground (think large buildings with multiple floors).
  • VC will include more complex missions that include a greater variety of objectives. These new missions will ask more of you by melding vehicle, outdoor and indoor combat all into one mission.
  • New side missions including pizza delivery :) .
  • The vehicle count has also been raised to 120 from GTA3's paltry selection of only 50. Many of the vehicles are inspired by 80's sports cars and yes, they have confirmed that motorcycles will be in ViceCity.
  • You will be able to shoot out tyres which will drastically affect the vehicle physics.
  • More boats have been added with rumors pointing to the possible inclusion of cigarette boats and maybe even jet skis.
  • Water based action has been revamped as well with an all new physics system for boats.

What have the press been saying about it? I never expected it to be anything more than a "remodelled GTA3".

Um... um...

But isn't that what happened with GTA3? It was contractually explusive to the PS2 for a period of six months and then Rockstar were able to release the PC version?

In the absense of any firm deity, I pray to you, Panda, that this is the case.

Those screenies look fairly "polished" to me - its annoying that the shots (particularly whilst a game is in development) released are often touched up.

Regardless, it looks fucking awesome :D

edit: just grabbed the movie at uberspeed to a shell, come speak to me on irc if you want a direct link (not for public consumption tho, if it gets posted anywhere or gets hammered Ill just remove it)

Just been browsing through a GTA4 'wish list' where ordinaries post what they want in... GTA4.
I wish you can go in to shops kill the shopkeeper
take all the food for extra health rob people brake
into banks in the night and make it a long night
you can have swords for weopons and every peircing
guns and explosives you can get in the world and
bmw veicles and motor bikes and there were women
carrying babys and dogs on the streets and smash windows
Jesus Christ... :(

Are you kidding? GTA3 rocks on the PC!

A lot of peeps had tech problems with it but recently, with the installation of updated BIOS, VIA and nVidia drivers, the game flys.

WTF?
GTA3 has to be one of the best games ever IMO, I never really played it on the PC as I had it on the PS2, I know alot of people who brought a PS2 just for GTA3.
The PC version wasnt much different from the PS2 version tbh apart from aiming, graphics etc.

tbh i found GTA3 crap.............

and i kept playing it. Tis addictive gameplay with some real LOL moments. Case in point, get a landstalker and go into the tunnels on staunton being chased by police. great fun. weapons arent anything good but its great fun with the cars.

so cant wait for the motorbikes and helicopters and some more intresting weapons. wonder if its possible to be chased by the police. dodgying around sky scrapers and the lark. hails of gunfire from the pursueing helicopters as well as from the ground. armed forces following the helicopter along the streets.

heh. just had a thought. wonder what the pimps will look like this time around, will they still have their pink outfits? :p

I have to agree, I played it a lot but the game itself had little point other than blowing shit up.

Not in the slightest. :)

GTA3 was fantastically good. The jobs were good, the longevity is there with vigilante/taxi missions etc (I'm still playing it a lot 2 months after completion). It's not as linear as Mafia, you can do a lot of it in any order you wanted. It's graphically nice, the attention to detail is good. The controls are just about spot on, it has a good selection of weapons.

I don't see how anyone couldn't like it if they enjoy playing games.
