Ok normally i wouldn't be bothered by something like this and would simply use a different search engine, however google is the fastest and the one i'm most comfortable with.

The problem is it simply won't show up on my machine, it's not my isp as other computers on my home network show it just fine.

I get the following:
http://www.freewebs.com/brassmonkeyman/google.html

I've tried deleting my cookies, temp files and ran Spybot Search and destroy program...all to no avail.

Anyone else had this problem? All suggestions are highly appreciated

Thanks in advance,

try doing the following in a dos box :

Code:
c:\>nslookup [url]www.google.com[/url]

the output schoul look samething like

Code:
Server: you.isp.dns.server
Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: [url]www.google.akadns.net[/url]
Address: 216.239.41.99
Aliases: [url]www.google.com[/url]

is the last part isnt the same, chances are your isp's dns server is fubar

if this is correct and S&D spybot doesnt find anything, there might be still a chance some new spyware is out there.
try installing mozilla and see if its still the same

(never let an opurtunity to pimp mozilla go by;) )

as a last resort, www.google.akadns.net should take you to google.

You're the victim of an IE exploit.

Do a search for your 'hosts' file. You'll find it (or one of them) has suddenly acquired a load of entries... one of them being Google.

Just delete it and all will be well.

I believe there's a fix on the MS site.

wierd thing is S&D should detect that tho

I agree.

I use both S&D and Spywareblaster. One of them locks the hosts file which has prevented it happening to me (the wife got it though).

EDIT: Just checked... it's S&D that locks the hosts file. It has to be enabled though.

Firstly thanks for the replies :)

I found a hosts file in c:\windows\help which had google, and many other sites listed in it. I deleted it but the problem still occurs.

And with spybot how do i enable the lock on host files? I've tried going to Tools > Hosts File then clicking Add S&D Hosts list. But this hasn't worked either.

I'm a total babe in the woods on this kinda thing so if i'm missing the obvious pardon my ignorance :)

Cheers,

If you're still getting the problem, there's probably another hosts file somewhere on your system.

As for the S&D hosts file locking, you have to start S&D in advanced mode, then click on 'Immunize'. You'll see the option to lock the hosts file on that page.

I'm not sure if the exploit bypasses this feature though.

It might be worth taking a look at this google thread.

Good luck!
