The clueless people has been saved

There will be no more crappy hotmail:
-No more 2 mb storage space
-No more 1 mb max mail size
-No more hacked hotmail accounts
-No more 7 trillion popups, huuuge banners and 400 spam mail a day.
-etc

Intead you will get:
-1000 mb storage space
-max 20 mb attachment size (afaik)
-non-annoying small google like text banners
-safety
-speed
-and much more

Yesterday I actually thought this was a Aprils fools joke, but it seems that it isn't. I think Google actually has to be the best company ever.

1GB per free account?

Heh, they are going to lose so much money to bandwidth costs when people start abusing that. :p

It HAS to be a April fool's joke... 1GB of space per account is ridiculously high, even 100MB per account would be too high. It's just not competitive, why make such a offer? There is no profit to be made when you're giving EVERYTHING for free.

Actually its highly competative, its just very silly. Besides, i'm not sure terms like competative can be properly applied to free email.

Still, this'll go the way of Hotmail imo - they'll use the large ammounts of storage space+ whatever other 'free features' they throw in to attract people and get them using @google.com as their normal Email address then tone down the freebie email and add in a 'pay' version.

That, or they'll sell the ad's at marginally inflated rate (ph34r my m4st3ry of busin3ss words :D )

I do agree however that theres a good chance this'll be changed. Too many people will start signing up for free email... though that would also increase the amount of banner space... When you think about it though they wouldn't really need to make a profit on it as somthing like this is sort of like free advertising for Google (even though there are probably few people who don't use it now-days)

Google generates quite a lot of revenue from its text-ads. Giving a lot of incentives for people to switch to gmail is logical, they need to give people a reason to switch away from hotmail and other providers.

Just think of the information they get if they control your email though. With regular password reminders from DAoC they'll know that you play MMORPG's online. With the information they collect on the types of email you're receiving they can give you relevant text-ads. More text-ads they show the more revenue they generate.

If Google get this right, they'll probably become the most popular provider and dominate the free email market.

Yes, any private server > free email provider.
And if you really want to bother sending 80 50mb files to send a DVD to someone, Im sure they wont mind.

One gigabyte can cost something like 0,4 dollars, something that few users will ever need.

An offer like that will make people leave their crappy providers and get a @google.com accont. The thing is, as everyone already got an email these days, they need a GOOD reason to change. Changing email is a hassle, and if you know that google is supreme to all others you will prolly change to them and stay with them forever.

I'm gonna get really impressed if google manages to pull this off though. Then again, I'm used to getting impressed by google. :D

The San Jose Mercury News notes that Google will also be searching your private e-mails in order to see what ads it might want to push you way.

Sounds great...

for people who doubt this there are a few facts to bear in mind.

The cost of storage is minimal these days and it's perfectly feasable to give up to gb storage on a huge scale.

Secondly google is planning to IPO later this year. It's estimated worth on the markets is 24bn dollars AFAIR (not bad for a 6 year old company.......) and they will potentially raise billions in free cash from minor share issues.

Whether they are worth this much is another matter, there is a strong line of thinking that search engines are the current internet bubble in terms of effective wealth over capital.

Advertising like this and gaining a large base of users (stealing hotmail users is a huge userbase) will increase their market share in general and make them an even bigger company.
