Good or bad?

I've phoned up my local GAME shop with a view to trading in my recently aquired GC for an Xbox.

I'm a bit jealous tbh. I wander into GAME and Blockbusters and there's at least 2 to 3 times more games for the Xbox. I read in a GC mag that there's only 20 titles confirmed to be released on the GC over the next year.

I'll be giving up a GC with two controllers, one wireless controller (that's 3 total), an 8meg card and a 4 meg one.
Games are: Eternal Darkness (completed), Burnout (great game), Resident Evil (completed on easy), Res Evil Zero (just started) and Rogue Leader (played a bit).

Basically they told me they'd give me 100 quid for the GC plus 3 games. Anything else will be considered seperately. The wireless controller is less than 10 days old so I can get a full refund for that and the rest I expect to fetch between 10 - 20 quid.

What I expect to get in return is an Xbox with 1 controller and Halo (or another game of my choosing). (150 quid's worth of stuff)

Does this seem sensible?

Seems reasonable to me, but you could also try Ebay with a reserve?

That's very reasonable imho mate.

I picked up my GC for £60 - just the console and 1 controller and leads - to give you an idea.

I've got an XBox and GC and am very pleased with both. Oh and a shiny new GBA SP which is lush :)

I think Ninty for pure fun and XBox for whizzbang effects and fun if you get what I mean.

I'd say that's complete bs tbh m8.

The big Ninty themselves have more titles than that due for release over the next year alone.

Add in Capcom & EA's games and that adds up to slightly more than 20.

Dont be a fool! Keep it man and save up for the xbox, there isnt a lot planned for the gamecube but the games you see for the xbox are mostly shite (i am an xbox owner too btw), games/quality ratio is a winner for gamecube by far..

Xbox is indded very excellent but yourt reasoning to get rid of the gamecube stinks to be quite frank, dont do what i did, i am on my 2nd gamecube and am still playing catchup on quality titles

Fleh, you don't even have SMB, Zelda, Metroid, or any of the other required games.

Buy 70 mars bars, and use the tokens in the chocollect thing to get money off, so an Xbox will be about £90 (not much cheaper than just being one at £130, but you get 70 mars bars for nowt, see?) - everyone on thedvdforums seems to be doing just that.
Or, get ono to give you a list of really cheap weird dodgy places, as he always seems to have some up his sleeve.
But don't sell your GC without at least playing the top stuff.

I am also a victim :)

Kenny you moron - keep the Cube. Without upsetting the XBox owners (of which I am one) too much - there's fuck all on it of any consequence (particularly if you don't chip it) except maybe the vastly overrated Halo and the excellent Panzer Dragoon Orta.

Given the choice between loads of shit on the shelves at Blockbuster or *some* gems I know which one I'd rather have.

By all means get an XBox (I traded a spare Cube in + 3 shit games for one at GAME in the same deal) but keep the Cube FFS!

My Xbox is now chipped with a new 80 Gig HDD - which cost me an additional £130 and I am having great fun on MAMEX but I would never consider an XBox if I wasn't going to chip it.

/Oh, and chipping means you can *cough* play games direct from the HDD without the original games *cough*. ;)

Funny,

I'm doing the opposit, I'm fed up with the poor standard of games on the xbox, only decent game is Shenmue II and I have it for the DreamCast anyway.

I'm planing to trade my Xbox in for a GameCube and Zelda. Trust me quality is always prefered over quantity.

You're right I don't own SMB, Zelda or Metroid Prime but I have played them all and tbh I wasn't impressed. Jumping around on platforms in 3d isn't my thing. I find it quite frustrating and gave all that up when Duke Nukem (the 2d scroller) was going out of fashion.

I find that playing a FPS on a console is equally as frustrating.
The games I've actually enjoyed playing so far are..Resident Evil and Burnout. I've rented/swapped other GC titles but wasn't all that impressed.

I'm more into the beat-em ups and shoot-em ups. There's the Marvel Vs Capcom games on the Xbox (I've got MVSC2 on the DC now but it won't load. :( ). Soul Calibur 2 will be on the Xbox as well as the GC.

I'm not really "into" the console scene and prolly never will be. I do own a few consoles from master system up to, for now, a gamecube but I'm very selective in what stuff I like. TBH if I could get the games on the PC I'd prefer that although it is nice to sit in front of the telly on the sofa to play games.

I'm rambling now. I just got into work after travelling to the other side of london to pick my passport up. Bleurgh.

Anyway, I'm really after stuff I can just pick up and play instantly and enjoy for 30 mins at a time. The truth is I got bored of Resident Evil. Yes, it did still make me jump in a few places but I found myself playing more because I HAD to finish the game after playing so far, rather than because I wanted to.

I'm also dissapointed with the versatility of the GC. It's got mini-dvd's which you can't do anything with. Normal sized CD/DVD's just won't even fit in there. Which means no copying of games. Not now but in the future when it's a "retro" machine and shops don't sell GC games any more.

When it gets to that stage I don't see anything wrong with copying games and distributing them. The games have had their runs in the shops and by buying an "original" copy from someone off ebay you're still not giving the publishers any more of your cash so what difference does it make? (I'm thinking DC specifically here).

I'm rambling again. I'm off. Still very tempted to trade in my GC for an Xbox.

112 games on there for GameCube right now, and climbing.

Having a look at that list I can safely say that either: they don't appeal to me, are/will be out on the pc, are/will be out on other console or they already exist in some for or another without any major differences on other consoles.

Fair enough then. I'm a Nintendo fanboy if ever there was one, but if it wasn't for Zelda and Metroid I'd suggest going to Xbox town - and since you don't like them it seems like an easy choice.

By the way, both are very slow starters. But both are absolutely stunning once they get going.

Yes Ono, that's a very interesting thread and it's got me thinking.

There's the aspect that if you fork out for modding and such for a Xbox it's a killer console but then can I really be arsed? The only reason I've bought new games for my GC at the mo is that a) it's new and b) I had other games to trade in so the new ones didn't work out too expensive.

If anything it's convinced me how good the DC is and how underated it was at the time. It can do a lot of stuff they're saying the Xbox can do...but I own a DC and don't need to spend 100 quid to get it to do the stuff the xbox can.

I don't really want to spend shit loads on console stuff.

I think for now I'll stick with the GC and the DC and just get Soul Calibur 2 when it comes out. I MIGHT just be bored of the original DC version by then. ;)

Can you tell I'm not very busy at work right now? :)

Anyway, regarding you saying they're both slow starters, I played Zelda up to the point where you get to sail around in the Boat and it hadn't grabbed me by then. I didn't have much time to play Metroid Prime cos it was rented and I ended up being too busy to play it much (I even rented it for a further night). It just seemed to me to be a frustrating control system having to target these little orange squares on the wall and shoot the occasional monster.

I've been told it doesn't STAY that way but, as I mentioned before, the idea of FPS on a console really doesn't fill me with joy.

Oh, I rented 007 Nightfire for the GC the other day and it was utter utter pants. Worst control system I've ever used.

The only one that has made sense to me so far is the default layout for Q3A on the DC. The good thing is, if I get sick of the controller I can always use a mouse and keyboard for it. :) Or alternatively..play it on the pc. heh.

FPS' can work fairly well on the Xbox, thanks to two analogue sticks, you can set it out like you'd have on the pc. The left analogue being asdw, and the right being for mouse movement, it feels quite natural after a minute or two. This is the default control setup for Halo (yes as ono said, absurdly overrated, but a good laugh none the less) and you can set 007 nightfire up like that too.

Chipping is a *must* for the xbox, there's so much you can do with it. Also, if you buy an xbox now, chances are you'll get a samsung dvd drive in it which has CD-r support, as opposed to the others which only supported cd-rw (and dvd-r/rw natch). This means you can set up xbox media player on it and use it as a little media station, play all yer divx's etc on it. It's jolly good. Don't worry about the difficulty of chipping it, if you have a soldering iron and a steady hand you can quite easily do it yourself.

The actual games on the Xbox are *ok* with a few corkers. Amped, MotoGP2, Splinter Cell and a good few more I can't remember. Priv me if you wanna know a bit more about the slightly more uh, dubious things that can be done with it. :D

I hate FPS console games.

I love Metroid Prime. It's stunning. Buy it, it will reincarnate your faith and warm fuzzy feelings when playing a game.

aye, dont sell your cube, there is some quality cube only titles. Mario, Zelda and Prime are worth keeping it for. Got some other quality titles like Super Monkey Ball, wave racer and Ikuriga, whilst not everyones cup of tea, are well worth investing in. Coming up is Mario kart, F-Zero, Wario World - another 3 AAA titles.

The box, in honest reflection, really doesn't have that many quality titles. PGR is wonderful, as is Halo (despite Onos damning words about it). And Dragoon. SC2 is best on the box (I've got all 3 versions). After that, Im starting to run out of quality game, DOA, Burnout 2 and thats about it.

If I was going to get rid of a cube for another games only machine, it would have to be the PS2. GTA, Gt3, Devil May Cry, Silent Hill, Metal Gear, Rez, etc.

Make a good decision. Keep the cube =)

I'm keeping the cube. Simply cos I cba to sell it and get a chipped xbox etc etc when I play it so little anyway.

I've got a Dreamcast so already have okay versions of games you mention above...Ikaruga and Rez.

The AAA titles you mention for the GC I've already tried and wasn't overly impressed. I guess I'm an arcader rather than a consoler at heart.

Truedat.

But the Xbox is VERY worth getting because of it's potential when it is chipped.
