just setup a LAN at home and wonderd if anyone knows some good network games to buy? i.e. ones that dont need a disc for each machine etc

UT can be good fun too
Age of Empires 2 is fun if you're playing with friends only.
Medieval Total war is brilliant too, but you need a cd per player I think

Uhm, if you have it, Medieval: Total War is a fantastically fun game. Need the CD to start it, but you can run the game, pass it on etc - server keeps the disc.
Same goes for Warcraft3.
Obviously, you can never go wrong with FPS's... lightsaber melees in jedi knight2 (or jk3 if you've d/l'd it, also the demo's out but i don't know what kind of MP value there is in that) are great as well as SvenCoop (Half-life coop mod) and any flavour of deathmatch.

Oh, hey, if anyone's into it - go buy a copy of X-Wing Alliance.
The race mode in that multiplayer is goddamn awesome. Plus it's got a decent single player, trench run an' all. But the multiplayer co-op missions, deathmatch or racing is utterly good fun.
