Just fitted a GForce 2 mx, ha what a tightwad, this is actually quite an upgrade for me, anyway for the first 2 mins I get terrible stuttering , not bad framerate but 2 secs ok then 2 secs lock up, after 2 mins it recovers completely and runs like a dream?

1.2 Duron, 512/133 ram.

Deleted all the voodoo drivers/ registery for glide/3dfx/voodoo
for my old 3500.
Any ideas, I can't think what it's doing for those first 2 mins that it then stops doing?

make sure that you have the latest drivers from nvidea also make sure you have the latest directx installed
also make sure that if you ahvea via chipset that you get the latest drivers see other post

Also if you have just installed new drivers it's often worth reinstalling directx. It gets a bit fucked up otherwise. :p

mine stutters like hell when I login - usin a geforce 4 mx...

but I think it's just loading textures from HD or whatever.. or caching them somewhere :)

Yeah what Fingoniel said .. when you first log in it loads all the objects/textures on the screen into memory. Which is why when you turn round it jumps all over the place as it finds new objects to load.

Really it should load everything you need into memory at the initial load. But hey this is the DAoC engine we are talking about ;)

Thanks reloaded divx and it's actually really speeded up initial load dramitically, but not in game,my original voodoo only had 16mb ram ,but would only stutter for a few seconds.
Maybe that's it, more loading into the 64mb ram, surely 2 mins is a bit long, but hey as you say this is the DAOC engine.

In trr-nog I would get a slideshow on the voodoo, but outside it actually ran perfectly, only thing no textures, all the grass was one colour, and most objects were white.

If you guys are running Windows 2000, get Service Pack 2 ASAP!

Windows 2000 clean lets your harddrive run in !!PIO!! (This is the mode from the middle 90's for 486/p100.)

You could compare this to: You buy a ferrari, but can't get the damned car faster than 10Mph.

Caution required, using a VIA (omg I'm really beginning to hate VIA) you might get these nifty INACCESIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE errors.

Take pre-caution for when that happens-> (Assuming your CD-ROM Drive Letter is E: and your Windows installation is at C:\WINNT)

Insert the Windows 2000 CD into your CD-ROM
Go to: E:\I386\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS and download atapi.sy_ to your c:\
Go to: E:\I386\ and download extract.exe to your c:\, where your atapi.sy_ is located.

Now go to Start->Run and type: CMD
Type:
C: <press enter>
extract atapi.sy_ atapi.sys <press enter>

Now, upon installing SP2, and after rebooting you get this error, boot your PC with a Windows 98 Bootdisk, load up onto DOS.
Type:
C: <press enter>
copy atapi.sys c:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS <press enter>

Hoping this will help if you get the problem, usually I state this as a first before telling people to install SP2, it doesn't happen much, but atleast you now know what to do when it DOES happen :D
