As u wander through the CS servers u can occasionly hear ppl discussing the fps they're getting, sometimes in the 90s. Wheel I have a Gf2 V7700 GTS 32mb with a 1.2 (266) Athlon perched on a board capable of 4x agp and with 256 DDR. Oh and I have Win ME and cable. So not bad mebe not the greatest but not bad. I have also got the latest Nvidia drivers 23.11 which don't seem to have improved my in game fps atall infact it seems slightly worse. So anybody have a similar setup with advice on how to get my fps past 40 ???

Right click your desktop, go to properties, then SETTINGS, then ADVANCED, then go into the Nvidia areas and disable VSYNC and FSAA (full screen anti-aliasing).
If your running CS in D3D mode, change it to OpenGL.

See what that does for ya.

Only an idiot would run HL in d3d with that setup.
Crapini: Your FPS may be capped, i forget the commandm, but it's something like ``cl_max fps''. Check your config for something similar.

OpenGL is the only way to play games, hell, you can even play QW in OpenGL :)

woo hoo we now have a stable 50 ffps, any advance on 50 ??

ok V-sync and glide have got me to 50.
This is how config.cfg looks on the fps setting side atm .

fps_max "99.0"
fps_modem "max"

thx 2 the ppl above :D

Changing to 16 bit colour/textures and lowering details will increase fps, albeit with an added ugly factor. Changing to low quality sound will even improve things too. It's a balancing act.
If it were q3, I could tell ya lotsa things to change, or point you to links with guides, but CS is just an occasional distraction for me.
You may find some useful info here or here

CS has 16 bit textures by default, so it's not that. I wouldn't use the glide drivers, since they are a mini-set, use the default opengl drivers.
What resolution are you running in? Lowering that will improve the frame rate. Most people go for 1024x768, I believe.

And the tweak guides contain lots of stuff about removing shell casing and smoke puffs and crap like that. Good for tweaking those last few frames out of it.

yes I'm 1 of those 1024x768 ppl and 16bit colour is normal.

The GF's have a default colour depth setting (16,32) themselves, within windows.

crapini, i have an athlon 600 with a gf1 ddr. I can manage 100 fps no problem until people start coming then its 60ish

with your pc you should have solid 100 almost all the time

opengl. 1024. fps_max 100. no vsync. no anti aliasing.

those things as people have said before me should give you near solid 100fps

if you cant achieve near solid 100fps then i suggest some serious foot > pc, action :)

hmmm will go try that myself, Here is some furter info 4 u, I have just reinstalled the AMD AGP Miniport Driver from the boards setup disk ( the only driver not present on the Gigabyte webb, had no effect ).

I have a good 17" Monitor capable of handling 100 Hz refresh rate that I leave set to optimal.

CS game settins:

Audio - Play CD music and High quality sound (for fast computers) both checked, the rest clear.

Video - Draw faster software sprites unchecked.

Also my figure of 50fps comes from net_graph 1

According to S.A.S's CS guide, this file contains tweaks for maximum FPS. Worth a try.

Your monitor refresh rate is best at optimum. This would only really be inappropriate if you had vsync ENABLED, as your fps would then be capped at your monitor refresh rate. This is why it is best to DISABLE vsync.

It does sound as if it could be driver related ...... either mobo or gfx, as you ought to get better than that.
Check in device manager that you dont have any irq conflicts on any of your hardware. Also, check what your AGP aperature size is set at in the bios (hit DEL on bootup when it says). It should be at least 64mb, but you may find a performance increase by increasing this to 128.

W00t!! 99 fps using Glide and for some odd reason 20 fps using D3D.
Thank you Ch@meleon, I checked out my bios to see if I had 128 Aperture size (which I do) also I erm...er.. noticed that an option called "Top Performance" (that lives with all the other AGP options) wasn't enabled doh!
and seems to have done the trick :)

oh and I did dl the maximum fps config (highfps)from SAS's CS guide but found the max fps listed to be 50 and as was aiming a little higher didn't proceed.

Thx 1ce again all, n1 Ch@m

Bwahahaha you should all temble at my pcsetup for CS. It utterly pisses on anything and everythingyou could possibly use (and this is true folks - me not joking here!).

I have a PIII 450, 128 ram and wait for it... an 8 meg ATI Rage.

Hawhawhaw, I can get a total of 100 frames minus 80 a second.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA...

/me weeps

Dolly that sounds like my PC b4 it got a £300 injection of case+psu, graphix card, processor and board with drives ripped from the old case along with sound card. Then using cheapo bits from Micro Direct and a m8s old monitor re-built the old 1 and sold it on to lessen the £300 dent :)

I wouldn't mind so much about the pc... but the fact that it won't let me upgrade the graphics card (because it is a total piece of shit motherboard... and god knows what) makes me hate it sooo much.

Makes me hate it more considering I have a choice of a spare TNT2, GeForce 2 MX, or GeForce 2 Ultra to choose from (all off a housemate who has far too much money then brains).
