Getting Older. Students and school kids take note.......

According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids
in the 60's, 70's and early 80's probably shouldn't have survived, because
Our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which
was promptly chewed and licked.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or
cabinets and it was fine to play with pans.

When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip flops and
fluorescent 'spokey dokey's' on our wheels.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags - riding in

the passenger seat was a treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the
same.

We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy pop with sugar init,
but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.

We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one
actually died from this.

We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top
speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes.

After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the
problem.

We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we
were back before it got dark.
No one was able to reach us and no one minded.

We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99
channels on TV, no videotape movies
, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet
chat rooms.

We had friends and we went outside and found them.

We played elastics and street rounders, and sometimes that ball really
hurt.

We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones but there were no law suits.

We had full on fist fights but no prosecution followed from other parents.

We played knock-down-ginger and were afraid of the owners catching us.

We walked to friend's homes.

We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school; we didn't rely on mummy
or daddy to drive us to school, which was just round the corner.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls.

We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They
actually sided with the law.

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem
solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion
of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned
how to deal with it all.

And you're one of them. Congratulations!
Pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow as real kids,
before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good.

For those of you who aren't old enough, thought you might like to read
about us.

This my friends, is surprisingly frightening......and it might put a
smile
on your face: The majority of students in universities today were born
in 1983........They are called youth.

They have never heard of We are the World, We are the children, and
the Uptown Girl they know is by Westlife not Billy Joel.
They have never heard of Rick Astley, Bananarama, Nena or Belinda

Carlisle.

For them, there has always been only one Germany and one Vietnam.
AIDS has existed since they were born.
CD's have existed since they were born.
Michael Jackson has always been white.
To them John Travolta has always been round in shape and they can't
imagine how this fat guy could be a god of dance.
They believe that Charlie's Angels and Mission Impossible are Films
from last year.
They can never imagine life before computers.
They'll never have pretended to be the A Team, RedHand Gang or the
Famous Five.
They'll never have applied to be on Jim'll Fix It or Why Don't You.
They can't believe a black and white television ever existed and don't
even know how to switch on a TV without a remote control.
And they will never understand how we could leave the house without a
mobile phone.

Now let's check if we're getting old...
1. You understand what was written above and you smile.
2. You need to sleep more, usually until the afternoon, after a night
out.
3. Your friends are getting married/already married.
4. You are always surprised to see small children playing comfortably
with
computers.
5. When you see teenagers with mobile phones, you shake your head.
6. You remember watching Dirty Den in EastEnders the first time
around.
7. You meet your friends from time to time, talking about the good old
days,
repeating again all the funny you have experienced together.

Yes, you're getting older!!!!

I was born in 1972. I know what it all means. :p

Wow that brought back memories too.

Every single spring I would wipe out on my bike and scrape my knees. No pad, no helmets.

Every winter we had snowball fights and went sledding down Dead Man's hill on the most dangerous sleds and sliders, and yet we survived.

I remember those attrocious snowsuits my mom made me wear.

Our pool in the back yard in the summer and all the water fights we had and my best friend and I would go hiking in the woods behind her house.

Still the smell of fall and the crispy crunchy sound of the leaves under my feet make me smile. :)

Hmm think I'll go outside and play football with my kids tomorrow instead of playing on the computer.

Thanks for posting that :)

Born in 1970, and i recognise everything in your post but i dont share this feeling of nostalgia loss or superiority you seem to feel just because youth today has it "better", which they don't they may not have the same problems or difficulties to overcome but they have their own.

Afterall one of your great great grandmothers probably gave birth to one of your great grandfathers in the middle of a field while she was working hard for a piece of bread and probably, either she or the child, almost died because of it, how dare people of your generation have their children born in hospitals.

lol aye, wiping out on BMX here trying to jump over stuff way to high :D

We had this stair 100m long pretty steep, leading down to a crosswalk, every winter we threw out snow over the stair so we could ride down, only problem was the cars that drove by at the end of the stairs so we built a jump so we flew over the road, but that ended when a friend wiped out against the side of a truck. :D Survived without and wounds :D

So you think it's good that kids these days spent the vast majority of their time sat indoors doing nothing but looking at a screen while being fed processed, fatty foods. Becoming overweight, obese, losing the ability to communicate with people verbally and writing are all more commonplace with todays culture. I cringe at myself sometimes when I realise the amount of time I spend inactive while I should've been exercising. It's not a feeling of superiority, it's a genuine concern that the human race is evolving into a fat, unfit, socially inept pathetic excuse for a species reliant on machines to do everything for us. Instead of the tall, slim, big eyed creature that we've always associated with aliens, we're much more likely to become Jabba the Hutt than anything graceful and intelligent.

The human race is a disgrace to Nature.

You have an image of todays youth that is totaly wrong.
What chldren do is up to their parents, as they grow up they start doing things the way they want.
From a point in on in life everyone is responsible for himself and his life.

You just remind me of my father that as i was growing up he would find every oportunity to remind me how hard his life was compared to mine, and his father doing it to him etc. etc.

If i had it easier than my father and my children have it easier than me i say that is a good sign, but i dont believe that is the case, i believe every generation has it's problems that are different than the previous one.

The most strong evidense imo that you are getting old is the fact that you can't feel the problems of today's youth and have an image of them that represents a very very small minority.

Unfortunately i live with it as i admit i don't have the courage and greatness to suicide, but if i had a button that would instantly kill every human beeing in existance i would press it the moment i could with no second thought.

I can only hope that a great disaster will happen before the human race finds the means to succesfully inhabit another planet and get the opportunity to infect and destroy the rest of the universe.

I think you are forgetting that there are actually good, yes I did say good, people out there who aren't going out of their way to destroy the planet or hurt other people/animals. Anyway, the way we are going atm we have no chance and are on a one-way trip to hell. Hopefully I'll be dead before the shit properly hits the fan though.
