Getting a GC....

I'm getting hold of a GC for virtually nothing (a fiver) with some games and I was wondering what else I needed.

What'll I will have:
1 controller
Memory card (dunno how big)
3 Games (Burnout, NHL something, and some wrestling thingy)
RGB (SCART) lead.

What would you recommend getting? I borrowed a mate's DC years ago and fell in love with Soul Calibur so I'm very tempted to get SC2. Was wondering if it's worth getting the jap version with the joystick? But then I need to get hold of something called "Freeloader" right?

What other games? Seems the Zelda wind waker one is getting good reviews. I might just rent a few from Blockbusters and see if I want to buy them.

I've not looked all that hard but preliminary searches show that there doesn't appear to be any emulators out on the GC. I get the impression that some consoles these days will run emulators on them like mame or whatever?

I've not had a modern console since..well forever. The newest one I've got is a Sega Saturn and I've only had that a matter of months.

Any help/advice appreciated! (bearing in mind my pockets aren't bottomless)

Cheers!

Zelda is out 3rd of May over here.

If you want emulation then a chipped Xbox is your thing as the GC has not been cracked yet. The games I have that I think are good are:

Super Smash Brothers Melee
Eternal Darkness
Mario Sunshine
Starfox Adventures (probably only worth a rent tbh)
Rogue Leader (looks fantastic)
Zelda ;)
Pikmin (decent strategy game)
Animal Crossing (gets boring after a bit)
Metroid Prime (fantastic)
Super Monkey Ball (if u want this then its probably better to get the sequel as i've heard it includes the first game)

As for SC I've played the JPN version on the PS2 and its more like SC 1.5 tbh. Its still the best beat 'em up I've played though. The US version is out end of August.

Right, here goes:

Freeloader - yes, definitely get it. It is basically a boot disc allowing you to play games from USA or Jap.

Games - here is a list of some that I have with marks:-
  • Winning Eleven 6: Final Evolution (Jap only) - the undisputed BEST footie game in the universe - 10/10
  • Zelda WW - If you enjoyed the N64 games you'll love this. - 9.5/10
  • Super Monkeyball 1 & 2 - this is what the Cube was made for - 10/10
  • Metroid Prime - once you get into it it is sublime - 9/10
  • Super Mario Sunshine - I've always preferred Mario games in 2D but this is as good as Mario 64 IMHO. - 9/10
  • Soul Calibur II (Jap only) - BETTER than the DC version and easily the best 3D fighter out. I have 2 of THESE and it makes a world of difference. 9.5/10
  • Eternal Darkness - graphically average, but atmosphere-wise far better than the Resi Evil series. - 8.5/10
  • Pikmin - you'll love this. A cutesy RTS where you control little plant like creatures. - 8/10
  • Animal Crossing (USA) - the game which made me sell my PAL Cube and buy an Jap/USA modded one. It's not getting a PAL release which is a shame cos it's brilliant. - 9/10
  • Star Wars Rogue Leader - a shallow but stunning shooter. I love it. - 8/10
  • Ikaruga (Jap/USA) - the BEST 2D shoot-em-up ever. - 9/10
  • Mr Driller Drilland (Jap) - Possibly the best puzzle game out - 9/10
  • Waverace Bluestorm - I rate this very highly. It requires dedication to play and learn the controls but once mastered you'll love it. - 8.5/10
  • P.N.03 - stylish and shallow shooter. Did I say Stylish? - 7/10
  • Star Fox Adventures - easy but graphically superb 3D adventure - 8/10

Others I have or had:
Sega Soccer Slam - 7/10
Burnout 2 - 9/10
Resi Evil - 7/10
Resi Evil 0 - 8/10
Timesplitters 2 - 8/10
Luigis Mansion - 7/10
Beach Spikers - 6.5/10
Super Smash Bros Melee - 6/10
Kunnike Man Second Generation (Jap) - 8/10
Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee - 5/10
Turok Evolution - 2/10 - don't let anyone fob you off with this shit.

Shit hot games out due in 2003 or so:

Viewtiful Joe
FZero GC
Mario Kart

You may want to get a couple of Wavebirds - best pads ever IMHO.

I also have a GBA Player and a couple of Hori Digital pads to go with it. Playing some of the GBA games on the TV feels like I have my SNES out again!!!

Apart from the GBA player, emulators are unheard of because of the difficulty in getting proprietory mini-dvdrom discs to put the things on. It's not like you can just chuck things on a CDR and boot it.

HTH Kenny mate.

Any question - let me know.

One other thing Kenny - most of the older games can be had VERY cheap second hand these days - so go to classifieds and the Ntsc-uk forums or thedvdforums where you can pick stuff like Rogue Leader or Pikmin for £10-12.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The person who sent me their GC left a US copy of Zelda: Widow Waker in it so I'm off into town to get a copy of Freeloader or Action Replay before he realises and asks for it back. heh.

I've spotted a Jap SC2 with a joystick for just under 100 quid. Worth it?

Also these Wavebird controllers. Are they worth 22 quid?

EDIT: Damn. Buying stuff for these consoles is expensive for such a cheap unit in the first place isn't it? Hmmm 30 quid for Action Replay in a shop or wait days and get it for a tenner less?

Metroid Prime...

As I'm a huge fan of the Metroid games (Fave game of all time is Super Metroid), I was looking forward to this. However I didn't really get into it until after I got to Phendrana Drifts, it was shortly after this that I became engrossed in it. It's definitely Metroid in flavour.

Pity the ending is so fucking short (Yes I got the 100% ending too).

:(

I'm back!

I went to GAME and got hold of Rogue Squadron II for 9 quid and Eternal Darkness for £13.50. I also picled up a spare controller and 4 meg mem card for 15 quid.

And I got some GC mags.

It seems the lack of Zelda has been noticed at my mate's house and I have to send it back ASAP so it's a good job I never did fork out for a Freeloader as it would have been useless. I did get the latest issue of Gamesmaster though which apparently has a demo of Zelda: Wind Waker on the cover.

Also I picked up my new glasses. I put them on when I left the shop and felt motion sick within minutes. :(

£100?!!! NO Kenny. You can get the same things from Play-asia for £85 delivered.

Wavebird is the BEST controller in the universe IMHO.

Dunno really. You have to import them at the moment. You could just buy an old sk00l GBA for £35 if you look hard enough :\

Have one but I like the idea of putting a GBA on the big screen.

Also you should watch what your typing about getting consoles cracked on here, after all this site is owned by a company who retails computer games.

Yeah I know what you mean. Playing Golden Sun on the tv would be good :D

It would all depend how much the GBAplayer is in the US on release and how skint I was at the time as I like my GBA SP too much.
