mine started as "Suck On This" - a magazine for rock clubs and gigs - had one single issue which we sent to loads of record companies and they lapped it up. Took them nearly 18 months to ask where the next issue was :D

went on to become SOT Promotions, then SOT IT Support, then SOT Publishing... i think the last time we dragged it back up we had SOT Home Office Supplies - got us tons of free stationary and printer ink :)

Just make some old crap up - whats your initials?

Redi, send me a copy of Suck on This :p
dude, if any existed i would, but it was shamefully bad :D just enough to make it look like we cared - the rest kinda did itself...

Island and Roadrunner both signed up, then a bit later Warner Bros started sending me stuff :)

Went and interviewed Sugar Ray first time they played the Garage - thought up a few questions on the train, finished with the classic, "so, is there anything you'd like to ask us?" and drank most of their riser

got into tons of free gigs, at which we made sure to befriend all the door staff and security, so we stared getting guest list for club nights too... was awesome :) Oh, and tons of free CD's... and i mean TONS of demos... most suck, but sometimes you get a gem :)

Sure - three of us knocked up a pretty badly designed A5 size magazine, with a few recent album reviews in (mostly ripped off from Kerrang and Metal Hammer, just reworded) and a couple of gigs we'd been too in the months before. I phoned up directory enquiries and asked for record companies and got 4 or 5 numbers, then trawled the net and managed to find about 20.

Rang around a lot of them, with a bit of pre-considered patter, "Hi, My names Andy and i'm editor of a new club-zine, Suck On This. We're looking for some more content and wondered if there was anything you could help us with?" At which point you will probably get put through to some random pr guy.

Keep your tone light, enthusiastic and brown nose any artists that the label has that you know and is relevant. Even if you don't like them, just brown nose a bit - say your nan likes it or something.

Within a fortnight we had Island and Roadrunner sending us press releases, promo photos, demo singles, new artists albums, and the odd bit of merchandise (t-shirts, keyrings etc.) to give away.

The people at the record company will ring you a few times to make sure everything is sweet - thats when you can start asking about live gigs of any new artists, etc. Our first was Sugar Ray and we got two AAA passes.

From then on out, whoever you speak to, drop names of your contacts in the record companies - it's a proper incestuous little business and they all know each other.

If they start to get sus and start demanding another copy of the magazine, then you have two choices. 1) print up another sub-standard copy, with as much content in as they've sent you, then beg for more. It has to look like it's been released though so send sales figures. Make them up. 2) sever all ties and tell them all that your magazine has had to shut down due to... stuff...

once you play a record company, you get the feel of how easy other firms are - get some headed notepaper and next thing you know you're a fledgling business and able to get discounts and wholesale prices if you're smart and drop the name in enough :)

probably, but when your getting your weekends for free the scam seems forgivable ;) heh!

There was no real crime committed, it's not like i actually scammed anyone out of anything. Merchandise like that is made to promote the artists, which it did and after you get known at venues, and amongst the staff, then guest lists are easy peasy...

Getting trade and wholesale price for electronic components, stationary, etc. isn't a con either - they sell that stuff to companies at that price, so they can afford it. The legality im not sure on, but morally im not burdened :m00:

unless you arnt paying your tax when you purchase it, then you are looking at some illegalness.

i dont think redis 'scam' was illegal. i mean, u did have a mag made didnt you? aslong as you didnt plagurise from anywhere then you are sorted. you didnt mislead anyone, you made a mag and told people you had made a mag.

i could make a A4 page with "shit" written for the title, put some random photos on of singers and a few lines of writing and print out. i could say ive published a new literature called "shit", can we interview your guys for some more content? afaik there is no legal definition of publish, of what publish does and doesnt mean.

well i've not done any time for it and the mag thing died off just about when bands like Busted were popular - f*ck that, i'd rather chew off my own legs whilst they were on fire than listen to them pre-pubescent chump-monkeys ever again.

Glad they split up, shame it wasn't into 6 parts :|

If you're at Uni it's probably even easier - just say you're producing a student magazine and want to do reviews for bands coming into the area that the campus might want to check out. Student cash is easy cash, i can't see many promoters missing out on something like that which would only involve offering a couple of guest lists and maybe a chance to meet a band :)
