As the release draws closer I am trying to get my computer setup so that I can run T2 at the best possible detail levels on my crappy system. I suggest you do the same.
Here I will post various pieces of info I have found which talk about T2 performance issues.
First off, the patches. From what I have heard from various forums people are having problems running the game. The dev team released a patch which can be installed via the auto-updater but the dev team then found out that the auto-updater also had a problem (ouch). Everyone who hasn’t been able to auth successfully says that re-installing, then applying the patch before you run is the only way they could get it to run so DO NOT RUN TRIBES2 UNTIL YOU HAVE INSTALLED THE PATCH MANUALLY. (it only affects some people but my advise is to install before you run anyway-I would say, download the latest patch the night before you get the game) So it is best to download the first update manually. Also the first update will fix the auto-updater so you should be able to auto-update when new patches are released. You can find all the patches released so far below, just follow the instructions at the top of the page:
http://www.tribalwar.com/sitecore/t2patch.shtml
Secondly there is the “Cdkey already in use” prompt when people try to auth their names. This doesn’t mean the obvious, it actually means that your registration name is in use. Try to think of one that no one else will have. Don’t worry what it is since you can make aliases and play as any name you wish, this is just for copy protection reasons. Also don’t worry about Tribes tags (clans in other games) because theses can be fixed around your name at a later date. This problem has also been found to affect people before they install the patch, even if the name they type wasn't taken (not everyone).
I have heard a lot of thigs saying that the game sometimes actually auth's your name the first time but for some reason says that the CDkey has been taken. So write dow the first couple of names you try and if you do keep getting "Cdkey has been taken" try logging in with the names you tried, alternatively you can get an email sent to you. Don't take my word on this since this is only stuff i have read off forums and i don't have the game... YET.
The UE (unhandled exception error). This is a bug in the game which the dev team is trying to sort out.

Dave Georgeson posted this in regards to the Unhandled Exceptions lots of people seem to be having when trying to play Tribes 2:
I don't have a date...but we are working on the UE problem right now. We are hampered by these facts:
1) This does NOT occur on any of the hundred or so machines that we've tested the game with, either here at Dynamix or up north at Sierra.
2) The computer configs that are experiencing this problem are all wildly different. Despite a thread to the contrary, this issue is NOT restricted to just one particular video card.
3) The logs we've had folks generate for us are all similar, but are vague and not specifically helpful.
As I said, we're still trying to find the problem. Once we find it, a fix will be on the heels of it.

Tweaks:
If you have a relatively low specked machine (like me) and you don’t want to fork out £300 on a new CPU/mobo (like me) then you might want to look at some of the tweaks going around. First of all there are some excellent tweaks on http://www.tweak3d.net Just search around on the site for your gfx card and start tweaking.
Also, I get a lot of friends asking me why their computers had become so slow recently. When I see their computer bootup I almost cringe when I see their system trays, stretching to nearly the other side of their 21” screens. Right, if you want to free up some computer resources I suggest this.
Click on Start
Click on run
Type msconfig and press enter
Open the startup tab
There should be a list of programmes with check boxes. These are all the things you computer loads when you start your comp. Most of my friends have about 4 different virus scanners (which haven’t been updated since 1979), 12 firewalls, ICQ and MSNMessanger. These all suck ram out of your system. So uncheck everything that isn’t vital. Now click ok and you should be prompted to reboot, go right ahead.
Drivers
This was posted by the man, Dave Georgeson himself.
Here are the drivers we tested with and the video mode that we experienced the best performance with for each of the card groups. I hope this helps you troubleshoot your own systems.
-----------------------------------------------------------
TNT: Det 6.50 (Runs best in D3D)
TNT2: Det 6.50 (Runs best in OpenGL)
Vanta: Det 6.50 (Runs best in D3D)
GeForce: Det 6.50 (Runs best in OpenGL)
GeForce2 (all): Det 6.50 (Runs best in OpenGL)
Voodoo 5 & 4 : 1.04.00 (Runs best in OpenGL)
Note: Some folks have said that you need to use the November release of these drivers...not the February release. This MAY have something to do with the UE problem. Try it out if you are having that problem.
Voodoo 3 : 1.07.00 (ONLY runs in D3D)
Voodoo 2 : 3.02.00 (ONLY runs in OpenGL)
Matrox G400 & G450 : w9x_623 (runs well in both D3D & OpenGL...not much difference, slightly better in OpenGL)
Diamond Viper II : w9x_95103 (ONLY runs in OpenGL and not at all on Win95B)
ATI Rage 128 & 128 Pro : 4.12.6269 (runs best in OpenGL and not on W95B at all)
ATI Rage Fury Maxx : 4.11.01.7925 (runs best in OpenGL)
Permedia 3 : 21070825 (Runs best in D3D)
PowerVR Kyro 3 : OEM Drivers (ONLY in D3D)
-------------------------------------------
I will update this when I get the game. Feel free to add your own comments/suggestions
