Gosh...why didn't I think of that?

There has to be 250+ of the feckers. Jumping sideways, and firing a rocket at the 'pack' does take a lot of them out, but the splash damage takes it's toll.

I particularly hate they way they all run off for a lap of honour once I'm dead.

Anyway, turns out I'm playing it on the hardest setting (thought I'd chosen 'normal...D'oh!).
