Geoworks Data File help

Friend has had her word processor die on her (its a Canon Starwriter Pro 7000) and needs access to her files asap for Uni. Luckily she saved most onto floppy, and I've saved them over to my HD. All the files can be read via Notepad but of course come out a bit shite. They all end with the extension .000 which I've looked up on t'net and paired up with her manual and worked out they are Geoworks Data Files.

Is there any reader or convertor proggie available for these? If not its not the end of the world as I can rip a lot of the text from them via Notepad to Word.

Cheers

Help meh Obi Wan Jonty you're my only hope!

Hi Xtro

After doing some searching on your behalf, I was unable to find any satisfactory converters for your friend's documents. Are the documents just plain text? (I assume they are if they can be opened in Notepad). If so, I would just create a new file extention in Windows which associates .000 files with Microsoft Word. This way you can open the files without any hassle, and then proceed to edit and save them in a .doc format at your convenience. Unfortunately this does mean 'converting' each document manually, but I'm afraid there's little that can be done.

To create a new file extention . . .
  1. Open Windows Explorer and click Tools > Folder Options.
  2. Click the File Types tab and press the New button.
  3. Type in 000 as the extention, and then press the OK button.
  4. Click once on the new extention in the list to highlight it, and then press the Change button.
  5. When prompted, choose the Select the program from a list option.
  6. Select Microsoft Word when prompted to do so (Browse for it, if necessary).
You could, of course, just forget this and open the files in Notepad, copying the text over to blank Word documents.

I'm sorry I cannot be of more assistance. Forgive me, Obi Wan.

Kind Regards

Wow Jonty, what a quick reply!

You are a star m8, thanks a LOT, very much appreciated! Well they are mostly text so as you say, I can just rip them over to via notepad to Word. There's a lot of garbage interwoven in the text - I suspect its just formatting code for the wordprocessor. So, aye I can manually rip everything out and cut and paste etc (or change the extensions etc as you kindly explained).

Thanks again matey :D
