Yip he's 172cm ala 5.7;, 5ft 11in here. His Mrs dwarf's him, poor guy has to make himself larger than life just to be in the same clouds she breathes ;) I wonder if that height estimate is also somewhat bloated.

You seen valkyrie yet? What a piece of shit that was...:(

nah, not seen it yet

...but...the guy does own a Bugatti Veyron, and until I get a spare 2 million quid to blow on the car and the same amount again to insure it, fair play to him.

I liked him in Minority Report.

But I just don't think he does cool very well. Hence why MI's suck a bit.

Fence, he has had some amazing roles where over-performing is the key, (much like Pacino). His role in Magnolia was simply amazing, and he was the only good thing to happen in Tropic Thunder.

He is a very very good actor, who maybe should choose his scripts better. It would also help if he weren't a scientologist nutjob.

MI3 is hideous, by far his worst film. Interview with a Vampire, now he was good in that. All in all though, over paid and over rated.

He is actually less than the stated 5ft 7in iirc, nearer 5ft 4in with no shoes on which is why he looked so tiny next to Nicole Kidman even when she was wearing flat shoes.

cho, he was also brilliant in Collateral, and the Last Samurai. Let's not forget Top Gun either.

Most top hollywood stars are overpaid, but unlike a lot of them (keanu reeves for example) Cruise can actually act.

edit:// had a quickly look at his filmography on imdb, there are some real gems in there amongst the good, average and bad films. Enough to make him stand out from a lot of piers.

Keanu Reeves can't act for shit

More De Niro & Al Paccino required. Heat. Now THAT was a good movie

I loved Pacino in Insomnia.

See now Al Pacino, he is the very definition of over-acting. Scent of a Woman, Devils Advocate.

Heat was amazing, but it had a great original to build on in LA Takedown.

Lets not forget Pacino and De Niro have had some awful flops recently too, Righteous Kill and 88 minutes.

Yeah, Bugz. Had some bad reviews and gave it a wide berth. To be honest, I don't think they're gonna be able to top Heat unless something really special comes along

Maybe, but at least when he does he's cool with it. Its impossible for Tom Cruise to look cool. Maybe Top Gun if you're like 14 years old and American. And stuck in the 1980s

I didn't say over-acting was a bad thing Lamp, it depends on the role. For The Devil's Advocate it was required, you can't play the bad man himself with a little flair. Scent of a Woman, I felt he overdid it though.

I already mentioned Magnolia, Cruise is magnificent in that.

Cruise was also cool in Collateral, as I've already mentioned, and Interview with a Vampire.

I think you just don't like him as an actor, it is a very personal thing.

There are one or two films that he's been in that are good, but they're not good *because* of him but in spite of him.

Top Gun... the soundtrack makes it good, not Tom.
Cocktail... Bryan Brown made this film, not Tom.
Minority Report... I actually liked him in this film. He was well cast for the role.
RUUUUUNNNNNN!!!!!!!
The Last Samurai... the direction and story made this film, not Tom.

He's one of those actors that I don't really have extreme feelings about one way or another. He's in some good films, some bad films.

MI3 is not a very good film. Even Ving Rhames and Laurence Fishburne can't save it. John Rhys Meyers is woefully underused. They'd have done far better to get him playing Billy Crudup's role. More than anything its down to a lacklustre script though.

Philip Seymore Hoffman did not get much chance to show his great creepiness, which is a shame. He's supposed to be this superbad bad guy of badness and yet the MI team outwit him nearly every step of the way. This does not make for an intimidating and believably scary superbad bad guy of etc.

Out of the 3 MI films, I thought the second was the best - not overly convoluted and Dougray Scott was great as Tommy's nemesis. (Don't get me wrong, I like intricate plots, I just feel that some films they pile on complications that aren't meaningful, they are just there to add confusion. Each complication should follow its own logic and not merely be an artificicial obstacle to slow down the protagonist).

Collateral and Last Samurai are good films, Tommy gets a chance to do some decent acting.

tbh with him I really cannot see what all the fuss is abut, in pretty much every film I've seen him in he plays a jerk, an arrogant, cocky, annoying smarmbag who everyone 'just loves' even when he's playing a nice guy he is just too 'hollywood' for my liking...

however, saying that I was amazed by him in tropic thunder and his performance in that actually demonstrated acting talent that was so good that for most of the movie I didn't even know it was him. That's what I call good acting, where you do something so completely different and make movies that are so different from eachother (in other words avoiding the typecasting plague) that people are wondering if it's them or not.

So imo, yes he can act well its just most of the time he flipping doesn't and he overacts the shit out of nearly everything to a point where I just can't bear to watch him.

Clint Eastwood, now there's a good actor/director; his films and acting are both generally (OK not in every case, but like I said diversity is good, if everything was understated it'd be just as bad) understated, believable and enjoyable. He doesn't try to do cool, hell in his last few movies he's been a crotchity old git with bladder problems, but he is far cooler (IMO) than tom cruise could ever be.

Meh, roles and actor, different strokes.

What is it with you brits taking the person behind the role into the equation?

Like Robbie Williams, many times i've heard the words "i like the music, but can't listen as he's a massive cock!" or akin to that. Bull, crap.

Tom acts good, he fits the roles he plays and what he does on his free time is irrelevant. Does he over-act? Not any more then Mr Gandalf McKellen or Have Some Face Hopkins. IT's hollywood, it's movies, it's always over-acted.

The movie Magnolia is where Tom Cruise rawks.

You are the only other person to mention it apart from me so far, I get the feeling no one else here has seen it, which is a shame. Amazing film, and show stealing performance from Cruise.

He's shit at acting in everything imo. Not good at all.

Even in Magnolia i was very aware i was watching Tom Cruise try to be someone else but the whole time he didnt convince me.

The only reason he's become a top actor is because he's generic.
