GeForce4 Ti4200

As it looks like I didn't win a Ti4600 (damn you, TechNation!) does anyone know when the Ti4200 is due for UK release and how much we can expect it to retail for?

The 128MB Gainward GeForce4 Ti4200 (or whatever crappy Pro/Ultra PowerCoolPack they've decided to call it) is up for sale in the US for $210, so can I expect to pay £180, or similar?

Anyone? Bueller?

I'm still in favour of a Ti4400 tbh, I can o/c it to beyond 4600 speeds for 80quid less..

From Gainwards press release
“At an expected street price of less than €350 incl. VAT the GeForce4 Ti-4200 GPU in combination with Gainward’s unique High-Performance/Wide-BandwidthTM hardware design, 128MB 4.0ns DDR memory, two VGA connectors, DVI, plus video-in and video-out offers by far today’s best price/performance ratio and will again easily blow away competitive products simply based on NVIDIA’s reference design,” commented Hans-Wolfram Tismer, Gainward’s Managing Director Europe. “The Gainward GeForce4 PowerPack! Ultra/650 XP “Golden Sample”TM will continue Gainward’s tradition of offering advanced, leading edge, ‘kick-ass’ products for the utmost enthusiastic 3D gaming community at a very reasonable price.”

€350.00 = £217.970

Go Gainward...I hate press releases.

D'oh! I din't even think to look at the Gainward site. Foolish. Foolish! Thanks, Itchy. :)

I guess online retailers will be selling it noticeably cheaper. The ABIT Ti4400 is on Scan for £227, Creative for £255. Ti4600 are £316 and £303 respectively.

Mind you, the 64MB version of that would appear to be around £124.
Gainward GeForce4 PowerPack! Model Ultra/650 TV/DVI: GeForce4 Ti-4200; 64 of 4.0 ns DDR SDRAM; DVI; VGA; TV-Out; nView support; Expected street price: 200 Euro.
That seems much more wallet-friendly.

Any comments? Is this lesser Ti4200 one to avoid, bearing in mind the (approximate) £100 price difference from it's bigger XP "Golden Sample" brother?

Dpends, the main difference is the extra 64Mb of memory and the lose of the extra connectors. When will games need 128Mb?

Some already do...

any game at 1600x1200 with antialiasing will benefit massively from a 128mb frame buffer, for more info read this section of our original GeForce4 feature which explains the maths - but basically if you want more than 30fps at high resolution with AA it's a necessity... don't believe all you read on toms hardware!

More memory allows you to go to higher res without losing so many frames :)

Hmm... so by only playing at my current standard game res of 1152x864 or even bumping up to 1280x768 I could save myself £100?

Hmm...

well technically by making do with 800x600 you won't need to upgrade at all

but that isn't the point now is it

if you have anything larger than a 17" monitor then being subtle anything lower than 1280x1024 sucks, don't forget 1152x864 isn't supported in all games and imo looks a little odd...

likewise 18" tft's have a native res of 1280 or greater

so ask yourself, if you have a 19" monitor and a relatively new pc why would ya want lower FPS at a decent res? eh? EH???

hehe, it makes such a massive difference that side by side it's hard to believe the Ti4200 is part of the same family as Ti4600 - don't forget we got the ultra at the same time as the normal mainstream part this time around...

if you've got the money i say go for the Ti4600 - and after looking at the major players offerings this month I'd personally recommend the gainward, not cos they gave us freebies for the compo but because the card is not only the quickest, but because it has all the 'sought after' GF4 features and then some ;)

Thanks, Xav. I always value yer comments. :)

That's a hell of a lot of money, though just so I can play at higher resolutions. I might just see how Unreal 2 performs and take it from there...

The 4200 provides the best bang per buck. Who the fuck really wants to play at 1600x1200 with FSAA?

1024x768 on my 21" monitor looks fine - and who notices slight jaggies in the middle of a firefight??? :)

1280 is my res and currently I'm all fine on my 19" monitor with a GF3 and no AA. Can't be arsed upgrading until some game needs the extra speed.

I must be under the thumb :)

so i hear mate, five nights a week in front of an audience too, you must be raking it in.... sick depraved soul :p

on the card front tho the Ti4600 is where the money's at - Ti4400 if you really don't want to drop the extra - AA is more than worthwhile, after all now all the games we play are fast-paced and a smooth picture without pixel popup and jaggies is soooo much more immersive :)

as to not noticing the lack of AA on a 21" monitor all I can think is you either really enjoy the games and don't pay any attention to the visuals - antialising isn't an afterthought nowadays, it was one of the first 'next gen' features as introduced back in the day of the GF2 and makes more of a difference in picture quality and realism than any amount of pixel or vertex shading.
