Geforce2 MX + Athlon + SI = Glorified Toaster?

Just activated SI, played it for 20mins on my other machine(specs below), then it overheats(i presume, as the heatsinks/psu were both hot enough to cook and egg on), then refuses to switch back on.

I have left it to cool down, and will try starting it up again in 30mins or so, but i want to know if anyone else has ever had trouble with daoc + Geforce2 + AMD Athlon, as this is the 2nd time something like this has happened.
The first time one of my ram chips died :p

Specs:

AMD Athlon 1800 XP
512mb DDR Ram
Geforce2 MX 200/400
WinXP

Hmmm u are scaring me now....

My com:

AMD Ahtlon 2000+
512 mb DDR
Geforce4 mx420

I dont hope there is a MX+Ahtlon problem with DAoC...

Then im just gonna go crazy, I think there have been enough trouble with this game already.

Athlon 1700 XP
724 MB 266 DDR
GF3 ti 64 DDR

Yesterday my CPU was running at 70 Degrees C, scared the bejesus outta me

Its basically AMD problem, not a game problem, AMD's notorious for overheating, I need to get a blow hoel kit and add a couple 120mm fans to top of my case and get some decent cooling kit for it, as its v dangerous atm.

a good case, good fans, and good heatsinks all help
a good place I found is http://www.2cooltek.com/
you might not want to order there (it's in the US) but it has some nice tutorials on how to optimize cooling

No where near that much memory :(
GF3 Ti 128Mb

SI locks up the whole machine about once every 3 hours, which I am 90% certain is due to heat issues as well. Now I am no expert, but still, a little bit of good news, checked on AMD's site and the chips should be ok up to 95 degrees F. Bad news is most boards only have sensors for the external core temp, which is quite a lot lower than internal temp...here's hoping I don't blow mine up before the new heatsink/fans arrive!

I usually run the following:

AMD Athlon XP 2200+
512 MB PC2700 DDR333
Gainward GeForce4 Ti4200
WinXP

but currently the GF4 is in for repair so I'm using a GF2MX.

I have an Akasa Silver Mountain 2 heatsink and fan, 2 chassis fans (one inducting air from the side - the other expelling air from the rear), additionally I have a 550W power supply that has 2 fans.

With all that it idles at 40 degrees and goes up to about 50ish under heavy load (e.g. games etc) and is solid as a rock.

However it sounds like a Harrier Jumpjet.

In summary I would say invest in a good heatsink/fan, decent chassis and some addtional cooling + a power supply to support the additional drain and you should be OK.

p.s. Another good thing to do is d/l and install a copy of CPU Idle - it will drop your CPU temp a good few degrees when NOT under heavy load which will in turn extend its life \o/

Eblessair,

I replaced my GF2 MX in one of my PC's yesterday , as SI ran like I was on a permanent relic raid :-(

Your heat problem is prolly an extra problem , check if there are no other cards installed right next to the video card. A case fan is no luxury on AMD systems either ;-)

The GF2 will give you more problems then just the heat , I found SI unplayable with it on a 1.4gig Athlon with 512 MB DDR SDRAM. The system now has a cheap GF4 440 MX and runs like a charm ;-)
