GeForce instability under Win95

Been going for some time. I'm using a 3D Prophet2 GTS64mb, and Q3 occasionally runs at about 15 seconds per frame (restarting windows usually sorts it out), and sometimes causing the system to lock suddenly (reset button time).

I'm using the 5.22 drivers off Hercules's web-page. The hardware itself is OK because neither of the problems occurrs under Linux (where i'm using the .93 nVidia drivers).

Is this a case of dodgy drivers, or is it just Win95 crapping up again (i have thought about installing the USB suppliment, but i'm not sure that'll do any good)..

is there not any chance of you installing a better (read: newer) os? :D

tis probably just win95 tho :)

If its a case of changing OS, i'l change to Linux outright. Installing a MS OS onto anything other than a new system is a pain.

I have also suspected residual VooDoo2 drivers, but i doubt they're causing problems as i didn't install the 3dfx openGL ICD.

I installed win2k over win98, was pretty hassle free :)

MS OS installers have a tendency to clobber the MBR without asking. a pain of you've got existing OSs you want to keep..

Windows95 Retail had a memory leak problem with the TCP/IP stack, if you haven't already done so make sure you've installed the updates from http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads.

While it doesn't explain the lockup it might be heavy swap file usage, use a permanent swap file if possible. To set that goto control panel|system and then performance|virtual memory. Choose a drive with ~200 megabytes free and set the min and max value the same.

It could be driver related or another issue. See if the troubleshooting and instability sections in the GeforceFAQ - http://www.geforcefaq.com

I'm using Win95 OSR2. Not sure if the exact version, but i also upgraded the TCP/IP stack to v2.

It ain't swapfile usage, as there is very little drive access once the game has started (i have 256mb of physical RAM).

I have looked at the geforce faq, and have thought about trying nVidia's referance drivers instead of Hercules'. I have no idea which motherboard i have.

I am convinced it is a screwed-up Win95 openGL setup, and is not Q3 specific. Not sure if this is something wrong with some MS DLLs or wether its the GeForce drivers tho..
