GeForce FX5600 problems

Can't even find how to ask a question on the DAOC question forum thing so still have no idea about this...

I've just upgraded to;
AMD thoroughbred 2600+
GeForce FX5600

Although SI runs, the frame rate is not very good (about the same as it was on my Athlon 1.33ghz with GeForce 2ti), there are occasional 'gaps' in the landscape where polygons don't matchup correctly. And occasionally the game freezes for about 5 second intervals (it seems to happen in certain areas, eg the dwarf camp south of humberton). There is also a constant 'stutter' to the graphics.

I'm using the latest detonator FX drivers (4.33), with windows XP. Have an Abit KD7 mobo, with 512mb of 400mhz DDR.

Although the game is running, I was expecting better performance from this hardware setup. Anybody else have a problem with geforce FX cards?

The 5600 is comparable in frame rates to the ti-4200.
I have a 4200 and i get a short lock up when running from prydwen bridge to prydwen keep.
Options include:
1. Take card back and get a nice 4800SE. (ti-4400X8AGP)
2. Wait for nvidia to optimise its drivers.
3. Tear your hair out while dealing with shoddy gfx.

All of which im sure, aren't of any comfort to you :l

http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030311/geforcefx-5600-5200-03.html

has an interesting comparison chart

Hell, that's not what I wanted to hear...
Why couldn't you have given me some good news... =)

Just kidding, thanks for the help. I thought the FX5600 was a lot better than that. Nevermind, it was only £125.
I didn't go for the 5800 due to the amount of noise it creates, hate noisy PCs.

I think I'll wait for the 5900 to come out (and come down lower than the damn £350 estimated price).

Cheers,
Dylan

Are you sure it is your comp the freeze depends on, since U said it was about the same as your old comp config.

Maybe it is ISP that is not cathing up, i noticed some diffrents (not much but a little) since i change ISP. migth be worth testing.

It's not my ISP (freeserve). The game would run fluent on my previous (less powerfull) setup, and I was using the same ISP.

Also, when I do get bad lag, the game doesn't freeze at all, just the other mobs and players.

I've also noticed that anti-aliasing does not work at all in SI. Quicux (or whatever) works, but is rubbish. It appears that SI is running using direct3D, but DAOC was running using openGL? Is this so?

Nope both use Direct X afaik.

Try using different drivers and adjusting the quality settings in the driver properties.

As has been stated the FX5600 has similar frame rates to the TI4200 but thats only in DX8 games, in DX9 it is 50% better. There's a v good possibility that the next add-on will use DX9 features so don't give up on it.

Also the FX5800 is not as noisy as some seem to think. early silicon was a problem but we recently got a PNY FX5800 in at work and it has a large heatsink/fan but none of the ducting.

I know this is slightly off topic but I've been wondering about it for ages. I have a Geoforce ti4400 and when I got it there was a blue transparent plastic covering on the fans - I left it on, but sometimes I get the nagging desire to peel it off - should I?

Osy how did you manage to track me down to the technical boards? Are you following me?

Thought I'd be safe in here amongst all the geeks!

Just got this reply from the support people in the US (actually recieved it within 3 hours of emailing them, so hats off to the guys).

---
The Geforce FX series of graphics cards do not currently work properly with the Shrouded Isles game engine. Please note, our developers are continually working with Nvidia in order to release a future series of drivers that will fix the issues that the cards are having with Dark Age of Camelot. One option you may wish to perform is to turn off the shadow effects option in the game menu options screen. Although the previous solution may help with the above known issues, Shrouded Isles may continue to be unstable with the GeForce FX card at this time. Please check back in the near future for updated details.
---

Not exactly solved the problem, but at least I know it's not a driver/setting issue on my machine, and will hopefulyl be fixed soon.

Well, it looks like there aren't any. Basically, SI doesn't work with geforce FX cards (or not properly) and some other geforce cards for that matter.
We just have to wait for either the next patch or new drivers from nvidia...

have the same problem :\

new drivers dont work because the win2k one is missing some .dlls.....
nice work nvidia :\

edit: after fooling around a bit and reading other posts
it looks like setting shadows to "classic shadows" in the options menu does the trick for the freezing problem

not sure if it helps the "lagging" effect which i got too quite often

Just got a new PC with a GeForce FX 5900 Ultra running driver version 44.03 and I have had no problems at all ingame. I have detailed shadows running and it's all nice and smooth.

Must pop to CS sometime soon and see what the framerate does :D

I am also having some major issues with the FX5600. I have tryed all the drivers (no effects). I have currently turned off video shadowing in Bios - Set all my options to classic interfacing. But one major issue -- Cant zone into Darkness falls or Summoners Hall. I have tryed all settings and cant get in -(kicked to desktop upon loading in this zone) Belive im gonna get a Raedon card and wait till they have a definite fix for the FX5600.

I too have just upgraded to the same card, brand new install of XP and new kit all round.

At firdt I had no problems at all, then i decided to update all my drivers, sound / mobo / gfx, then the problems started.

After dling 45.23 from nvidia, the game gained a stutter, so severe at times it was unplayable, the sound even started to do it as well.

Eventually i dled every patch and fix for everything in sight, but to no avail. So i decided to take drastic action and fully rebuilt windows.

As a precaution i loaded the original disks that came with the gfx card (AOpen GF5600), and to my surprise it loaded 43.25 drivers. Now it runs smoothly once more, so my tip here is stick to what comes with the card instead of thinking the newer ones are better.

Only prob i now have is that i dont seem to be able to run a second copy of SI, it reboots my PC when the loading screen finishes, any advice here? (pls dont say get the latest DX9 or drivers :p)

i too recently bought a Point of View GeForce FX5600 card with 256 ram...and was also quite dissapointed when i booted up daoc...i got the nice watery effects and the shadow which i quite enjoy..

however my fps didnt increase signifiantly (sp?) compared to my former GeForce2 MMX 64 mb ram...

and also having tried quite some things i realized that by installing an addiotional 512 ram so i now was running 1024 pc2100 ram increased fps a lot and seemed to have minimum fps lag...only the first second when entering places like domnann and objects was loaded...

but really hope that nVidia fixes this issue...

anyone had the url for that thread about them working on it?

I have a AMD comp with GeForce FX5200 card, and it works fine in pve, with shadows and water effects. But in rvr, I always lag when running on skald speed and permasprint, especially when running uphill in Emain :p

Have tried to update drivers, but will be grateful if someone could point me to a resource on the net for drivers/graphic card details. The n00b wants to learn hehe

Wait a couple of weeks, Nvidia should have some new 50.xx drivers coming out (no doubt to coincide with the release of HL2).

Wether that will fix your problem I dont know, but its worth a shot :)

I have a Geforce FX 5900, had it for sometime now, and I am unable to go into certain areas (comp freezes, go ld) in both SI/Classic land, i.e behind the portal in Aegir, Iarnwood Forest, some parts of Hibby frontier also running through Myrkwood towards Spindel :(
Although I have been able to avoid these places or work around it, its getting quite annoying and would like to visit these places sometimes, so before I retry and get myself stuck somewhere....

Does anyone know if the Geforce FX card problems (new drivers) has been sorted yet ? ;)

Go back to classic shadows and see if that helps. As for the latest drivers i got those but dont have DAOC anymore so can't say. Would be interested to know though.

In a word ..... NO :(

52.16 drivers made sod all difference

Strangely i managed to get mine working fine using 44.71 drivers.
Yet the following day, despite changing absolutely nothing, it was back to laggy stuttering sound and grafix - go figure.

I am getting a little bit pissed off with this shite now - esp as nvidia list DAoC as one of the games recommended for the FX range.

Ah well no tempatation to pop back and renew subs then. Did you get it working with classic shadows ok?

Classic shadows made little or no difference.
Vid bios shadowing made little or no difference (nor did any other bios settings).
Setting grafix to performance instead of quality made a little bit of difference but not much.

About the only thing which made a noticable difference was lowering the res to 800x600 - my old mx440 could run higher resolutions than that !

Tomorrow im going to put the card in my other halfs pc. She uses an Nforce mobo, mine is VIA.

If it works then ill try it in another pc running an old irongate chipset.

If that works then i'll know that the FX cards and VIA chipsets dont work with SI

Current spex

Soltek 75DRV mobo
AMD 2000+
512mb pc2100
SB Audigy
and the bloody FX5200

I'll let you know how i get on

VIA chipset + GeForce FX + DAoC = Grief

Put it in an Nforce mobo with DX8.1 and 44.71 drivers - ran well
Updated to DX9b - ran better
Updated to Det 52.16 - ran better
Updated to latest Nforce drivers - ran better

spex known to work
Asus A7N266 (Nforce 1)
AMD 1800+
512 mb pc 2100
SB Live
and that damn FX card

There appears to be a problem with FX cards and VIA chipsets.
Oh well the other half has gained a nice new grafix card and im back to using the old MX440

Time to order a 9600 radeon methinks
