Is there a gamer version of facebook/myspace? I'm sure there is, but are any of them good?

I had a vision of the old BarrysWorld membership area combined with a social network interface. Gamers can play games on the site. Link up with gamers from other games. Beta testers can check future testers backgrounds. Information can be gathered (in a nice way of course) about gamers habits. Games could link directly to the gamer social site via web 2.0 developments.. the list goes on...

Just an idea I had (which I saw this 6/7 years ago :|).

If there are no sites out there, would a gamer social network work?

Yeah sites like clanbase and clanintern have been doing this kind of things for years. User profiles + clan profiles, private messaging and stats.

I thought the whole point of being a gamer was so that you could get out of being social :)

What Maz said!!

I think like Mabs pointed out - Steamfriends/communities is all gamers really want/need.

Social sites become seem to become an end in themselves rather than the means to an end that they started out to be - hence bands and thier "zomg must have the most friends!", and others who just randomly invite everyone to increase thier friends count.

I have a myspace somewhere, very rarely log into it and cant remember the last time I went as far as actually talking to anyone on it!

Steam friends is good because it connects people to the games they're playing, you can join a freinds game through steamfriends etc etc etc - you can even have a steam "ID page" where you can do something similar to one of these social sites, but that isnt the whole point of steam friends - playing games is :)

Its a good idea SAS - I just think competing with steam would be a bit of a struggle, possibly a pointless struggle seeing as steam friends is already installed on anyones pc who has HL2, CSS or TF2 - trying to start off would be difficult even if you could duplicate/exceed the services that steam friends provide.

The problem with myspace is once you have the profile and friends... That's it? I log in once a month, if that too. There are a load of things you can do on myspace, but it's a lot of effort :). Facebook though has got it about right. Loads to add and do and very effortless (Web2.0)?
