People who play games regularly seem to develop a mental state that we have seen before only in serious athletes or professionals such as astronauts, whose life depends on concentration and co-ordination," said Jo Bryce, who led the research. "Their minds and bodies work together much better than those of most other people."

"They seemed able to focus on what they were doing much better than other people and also had better general co-ordination. Overall there was a huge similarity with top-level athletes. The skills they learnt on computers seem to transfer to the real world," Rutter said.

Yes! I knew I was a finely honed, athletic, astronaut type! Now everybody else does too!

Since showing this article around at work I have noticed a new respect for me in the office. People have a certain glimmer of awe in their eyes.

One young lady mentioned how sexy it was knowing that at any time I could whip out my weapon with a well-coordinated flick and start spraying people.

I am gamer. Hear me roar.

I think the pro athletes have known this for ages.

Wasn't it Jack Veal-Nerve (sorry can't be arsed to spell his name) and David (bastard turncoat wankstain) James who were addicted to games?

I reckon people who play online and can use the internet properly and know their way around the computer and wotever have to have a certain degree of intelligence. If only cos Newbies seem to find it all so confusing..

Not all research shows the benefits of information technology for teenagers. A separate study by Griffiths showed that many children using their computers to excess developed severe personality problems. One 16-year-old boy spent 70 hours a week at his computer and had no friends except those he met on the internet. He once abstained for three days and showed withdrawal symptoms.

How very true...

Stop Press. Regular gamers see an increase in their muscle coordination, concentration and focus, but can also suffer from social isolation. More hard hitting investigative reporting there :)Hardly surprising - the Sunday Times does always seem to resort to stating the obvious when it comes to any technology issues.

Notice the girl in the picture is playing The Rock, btw :) I think maybe her parents should sit her a little further away from the screen unless they want her to suffer from that other bane of the gamer, "fucked eyes".

Thing is, as Windows and other apps and online services become more 'newbie friendly' (Definately seen with WindowsME and soon XP) more people with an erm... 'lack of intelligence' are able to just boot up and play, with lots of nice big colourfull menus to help them. :(
