The govenerments drive to tackle the number of children playing 18 rated games has taken a step further with plans now being drawn up.

Among the possible measures to make parents more aware of the rating systems, could be a campaign to explain to parents that many games are made for an adult audience, as well as changes to the labelling of the games themselves.

Roger Bennett, director general of Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association, said: "A number of initiatives were discussed at the meeting. "They will be formulated to create specific proposals to promote greater understanding, recognition and awareness of the games rating system, ensuring that young people are not exposed to inappropriate content."

In a report published this week for the Video Standards Council, Dr Guy Cumberbatch said: "The research evidence on media violence causing harm to viewers is wildly exaggerated and does not stand up to scrutiny."

The full report can be read here on the BBC.

An interesting random statistic... According to industry statistics, a majority of players are over 18, with the average age of a gamer being 29.

What measures do you think we should take? Also is there a difference between a "computer game" and a "video game", or are they the same thing?

Totally agree with the advice for parents thing. Kids should not be playing certain games anymore than they should watch certain films, and parents need to learn that they are the ones responsible for bringing up their children, not the state.
The state should issue guidelines, not do it for them.

Someone said on a TV debate that in 3 or 4 years this problem will sink without trace because the current generation has grown up with computer/video games and will be clued up more on what their own kids should or should not be playing.

Shop Sellers shouldnt sell games to people who are younger than the rating indicated on the game.

Parents should be more involved and know what their kids are playing to prevent them playing games that are not suitable.

Having more warning labels probably won't make much difference as seen by the lack of effect of warnings on cigarette packaging

The amount of kids buying San Andreas for their kids is shocking, you tell them what the game is like, and they still can't see why its unsuitable for their 13 year old.
