Files and Patches
Trailers
A quieter week than most on the propaganda front so I'll start off with the gentle game that is RailRoad Tycoon 3 and the folksy 28 MB trailer that sets the story for the game but includes virtually no in-game footage. I'll probably have a look at the game when it comes out next week as I'm an old skool fan of Transport Tycoon, another game for my list is Medal of Honor's sequel "Pacific Assault", although I will have to wait until next year before I get a chance to play this one. Building on the success of the Medal of Honor franchise Pacific Assault will feature new technology, multiplayer modes and far larger maps that takes the game up to a similar scope of BattleField 1942, a couple of tech demos explaining some of the new features being released this week and available to download here and here (both very small).

Continuing on an FPS theme a small trailer for upcoming RavenShield expansion pack Athena Sword has been released, personally I enjoyed the original game but found it very short and there doesn't appear to be a great deal shown in this trailer that convinces me to pre-order right now, but I guess if you are into game more than me you might be looking forward to its mid-November release. An even more acquired taste will be Dr Seuss' The Cat in the Hat, based on the popular series of children's books that are being turned into a movie (starring Mike "Austin Powers" Myers in the title role) this platform adventure will definitely be very weird and probably appeal more to the younger generation, a small trailer being available to download here whilst a playable demo is also available, more on that in the following section.

The countdown to the final Lord of The Rings film is will and truly underway and this weeks sees two trailers for related games being released, the first is another in a series for the RTS game War of the Ring. Giving you the choice of playing on the good or evil side of the story this trailer gives us a good idea of what to expect from the final release but perhaps does not quite capture the feel of the movies. The same I believe can be said of upcoming action-adventure game The Hobbit, seeking to compress the story into a very cartoony game it will certainly not be a favourite amongst Tolkein purists but should prove a favourite of youngsters with this trailer being quite action-packed.

Playable Demos
In terms of demos things are pretty normal this week with a whole bunch of chances for you to test drive the latest (or future) releases. One good example of this is the 131 MB demo for Halo, both single and multiplayer supported with the chance for you to play one of the missions from the full game and also a solitary multiplayer map that includes a couple of vehicles, I got bored of Halo's single-player aspect fairly quickly but it seems as if there is an effort to make it the next big pro-gamer title so I am tempted to give the multiplayer a go. Another FPS game with a strong multiplayer aspect is Apocalyptica, released today in the UK the futuristic 3D action game takes a varied approach to combat with guns, melee weapons and magic all put to use within various character classes, the 166 MB demo featuring the first level and two of the characters from the full game.

It might prove a tad harder to get your hands on a copy of Midnight Nowhere, this Russian murder-mystery has no UK release date but nevertheless a 160 MB demo has been released, featuring one full level from the game you can download it here and take a look for yourself at what looks like being a really gritty affair. Contrast this with the comic feel of the 35 MB demo for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the old franchise making a comeback with this game at the forefront of that and I hate to admit it but I found the demo a good waste of 15 minutes or so, the cell-shaded action game pretty basic but enjoyable none the less and the demo does contain a good few levels from the full title. Dr Seuss' The Cat in the Hat is a similar sort of cartoony adventure game, this 115 MB demo giving you the chance to try a level from the full game that is due to be released early next year.

The final three demos to mention all aim at simulation a real-world environment, all be it very different aspects of this wonderful place in which we live. At perhaps the seedier end of the scale there is this 121 MB demo for casino-developer sim Vegas Make it Big, available to buy already the demo gives you the training mission from the game and the second level as you bid to create your massive resort empire. Out next week to buy is driving sim Ford Racing 2, an 82 MB demo can be download by clicking here and allows you to test two cars and two tracks from the final game. The final demo I have for you is for flight-sim F-A 18 Operation Iraqi Freedom, due to the massive scale and detail of the full game (photo-realistic terrain etc) the 36 MB demo is limited in scope but you can download it here and see for yourself if it is a game you want to search out.

Game Patches
Today at long last sees the release of Max Payne 2 and all the reports I've read say it lives up to the hype, all be it perhaps not for long enough with the game being possible to complete in a few hours. If however you get it home and find yourself having crash issues with the error "Exception: Bad Allocation" coming up then you should grab the small v1.01 patch which will correct this. By contrast the 12 MB v1.01 patch for Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death not only fixes bugs but also adds some new server commands, introduces some improvements to the gameplay and also some new options so that you can tweak the game further to your liking.

This week has seen another free official map for the Warcraft 3 expansion pack Frozen Throne, "Haven of the Damned" is a tiny download but continues to help extend the life of Warcraft 3 which will come under some pressure in the coming months from the EverQuest and Lord of the Rings RTS games. Another veteran game that has seen an official release this week is the RTS / combat game Gladiators of Rome, not a title most of you will be familiar with but if you do happen to own a copy then the update might help you with any crash or lock-up issues you experience.

Mods
Those of you who fancy having a crack at developing your own mod or map get a bit of help this week as far as two games are concerned, the first being Tron 2.0 which has seen a level editor release for it a wee bit ago and the 13 MB bundle finally making it on to our FTP shortly after I sent the Newsletter last week. Slightly newer is the latest version of the BattleField 1942 Mod Development Toolkit, v0.9a is just under 2 MB in size but includes some basic tutorials on how to put it to work and create your own 400+ MB mod.

There have been a few Unreal Tournament 2003 mods getting an update this week and there will probably quite a few more to mention in next week's newsletter as the second stage of the "Make Something Unreal" competition draws to a close. The first to mention is GODZ, this fantasy-styled conversion of the UT2K3 engine is quite impressive to look at and can is now running on v1.40 which comes in at almost 125 MB, alternatively you can check out the new version of Wild-West style mod Lawdogs, if you have the original beta then all you need is the 60 MB v1 to v2 patch.

Finally from a service point of view our version of OSP for Soldier of Fortune 2 has been updated this week, now on v0.3k the latest release includes the usual vast array of changes, fixes and additions to *the* SoF2 competition mod.

Special Offers
No special bargains for you this week but a couple of reviews you might want to check out from Scot, our new staff writer. First up is one for Viewtiful Joe, the much-heralded GameCube platformer is released today and has been greeted with applause from pretty much every game site I have read, to get Scot's view on one of this years most innovative titles click here.

On the PC front if you read these newsletters in any detail you'll know I'm a massive fan of the Max Payne series of games and Scot has also had a chance to look at the released today Max Payne 2, another game that has had the critics generally falling over themselves to give plaudits to, especially in light of the ongoing disappointment surrounding the release of DooM 3 and Half-Life 2.
