Files and Patches
Plenty to get stuck into this week on the F&P front, starting off with the single player demo for upcoming shooter Breed. I say shooter because the game looks like a cross between Unreal 2 and BattleField 1942 with you being able play it in a traditional FPS style and also pilot a variety of futuristic vehicles on land, sea and air. More information can be found by dropping by the homepage of the game here, whilst the 140 MB demo is available on the FTP by clicking here. Also on the demo front is a 119 MB sized preview for the released-next-Friday Colin McRae Rally 3, this is likely to be one of the best driving games released for the PC this year although I'm sure TedTheDog will have something to say about that, to see if it is your cup of tea you can take it for a test drive by grabbing the demo here.
If demos are not your thing then how about a totally free full game? Following on from a good response to the demo release a week or two back the final version of Enemy Territory has been unleashed on the masses in the past couple of days, this RtCW based WW2 game was originally intended to be released as a commercial game with both single and multiplayer aspects, however a few months ago the decision was taken to scale this back and instead the standalone multiplayer only game (it does not require RtCW) is available completely free of charge from our FTP. Please note though that with it being effectively an entire game the download is a massive 260 MB, so strictly is for BroadBanders only, however if you are on a nice phat connect you can grab it here.
Moving on to Patches and the first to mention are a couple of unofficial updates for Anachronox, the stylish Space-based RPG that was released a couple of years ago. The two files have been released by an ex-developer of the game so are not officially supported, however if you are still playing Anachronox you are probably tech savvy enough to know what you are doing with them and they could breath new life into your game with gameplay tweaks, crash fixes and better compatibility for Win 2K & XP. The first patch is version 44 and can be downloaded here, whilst the second is version 45 (available here) and must only be installed after you have updated to version 44, both are relatively small files so no need to worry about the download time.
One game that is probably older than Anachronox and has also recently seen a revival is the Rocket Arena 3 mod for Quake 3, often thought to have been abandoned by the developer the mod has received a shot in the arm in the last few months with a much-needed update followed up by a further update released this past week taking it to version 1.65. The latest update comes in two sizes, a full 101 MB file (available here) or an upgrade from version 1.60 to 1.65 which is much more manageable 11 MB or so (available here). Other game-related downloads to mention this week are a pair of maps for recently released titles, first up is an official map for RavenShield which has been created by one of the development team who worked on the title, the 1.6 MB file being available on our FTP here. A couple of days before this Codemasters released a beta version of their own multiplayer map for Project IGI 2, this one using a Dockside theme which has already proven popular in other FPS games such as Urban Terror and Counter-Strike, at 28 MB it is a pretty hefty download for just one map but if you want it then you can grab it here.
Special Offers
The latest installment of the massively popular (if slightly generic) Tomb Raider series comes to the PC next Friday in the shape of Tomb Raider - The Angel of Darkness, Lara Croft once again donning not very much in the way of clothing as she follows a slightly different path this time in a more urban adventure through the rainy (mmm clingy lycra tops) streets of Paris, Prague and other European cities. You can check out a 30 MB trailer for the game here, whilst if you pre-order the title from GAME you will receive a free and exclusive Collector's Edition Preview DVD which includes a "making of" special, the soundtrack to the game, photos of the real-life Lara Croft, TV spots and a Movie Trailer for the second Tomb Raider film which is due out later this year.
On a similar movie-game note it is fair to say that opinion on the recently released Enter The Matrix game is as split as that on the Matrix sequel itself, however with the game having sold over a million copies in the first couple of weeks of release it certainly seems to have an appeal beyond that of just hardcore fans of the films. As a special offer to ensure you get the best out of the game we've got three new bundles which each combine the title with a different SoundBlaster card and save you some money in the process, if you are indeed looking to beef up your PC's sound system I'd recommend going for the Audigy 2 bundle as I upgraded to that card a couple of months ago and have been very impressed with its performance so far.
That's it for this week from me, hopefully see you in the games at some point.
Regards,
Dave "BigFoot" Angus
