GAME.NET News
This past week has seen the first step in our redesign of the GAME.NET website, this process aimed at making the site more intuitive for you to get around and also better highlighting what is going on across the GAME.NET service. All feedback is welcome, if you have any comments or suggestions to make as to how we can further improve the service we offer you then feel free to reply to this email :).

I mentioned the World Cyber Games last week and our signup pages for the two qualifying events which we are running went live during the past few days, the competitions open to all UK citizens who want to participate with the lucky winners getting seeded berths at the September UK Finals in London where a total of £50,000 worth of prizes will be up for grabs. The UT2K3 tourney is for individual players (register by going here) and will be run by our GameMaster Guffrie during the month of August, whilst the Counter-Strike competition (register here) is for teams of 5 players and will be run by the BarrysWorld Counter-Strike League head Andersschm during the same month. Further details about these online qualifiers can be found here and the closing date for participants to register their interest is the 31st of July.

On to the service news and there are plenty of updates and improvements to our service to mention this week, starting with the addition of Medal of Honor Admin Mod (MAM) Support for SpearHead, more details about which can be found here. MAM support gives you superior control over your SpearHead bookings, be they on Clan Servers or Bookables, and hopefully will greatly enhance both services if you use them for this popular Medal of Honor expansion pack. On a similar WW2 theme we have also tweaked the BattleField 1942 booking system to add more configuration options for when you set up your server, we have also added the Battle For Britain map which I mentioned in last week's Newsletter.

Further updates for games include support for the Version 0.3e of the OSP mod for Soldier of Fortune 2 and advanced map options for Vietcong allowing you to switch game mode from map to map in any rotation you set up. We've also added a couple of the more interesting UT2K3 mods which I mentioned last week to our Bookable & Clan Server services, the first being Jungle Warfare (effectively Vietcong for UT2K3) and you can download the not inconsiderable 267 MB Beta 1.2 by clicking here. The other mod to be added is the Star-Wars based game Troopers: Dawn of Destiny, the 146 MB demo for this mod can be grabbed here and the early reports I have heard have been fairly promising.

Files and Patches
After last week's deluge of files things have eased off a little this time around, hopefully allowing those of you with bandwidth caps to see out the month without breaking your limits. With regards to trailers I've only been able to find a few minor PC ones, the first being for the upcoming Version 2.0 of the popular Half-Life mod Natural Selection and showcasing some of the new levels that the update will feature, the 30 MB movie downloadable here.

Moving away from FPS games the other trailers this week cover a wide range of genres, the 3D-adventure game Journey to the Center of the Earth having a French trailer released which showcases footage from the game. The 30 MB movie can be grabbed here and it certainly does look to make the most of the Jules Verne universe from which the game draws much of its source material. From the relatively pedestrian nature of that trailer there couldn't be a more starker contrast than the small 8 MB trailer (get it here) for the upcoming multi-platform game Conan, this 3D / RPG game seeing you hack and slash your way through a multitude of monsters with the game drawing heavily on the Conan feature films. A complete change of pace for the final trailer this week with more footage from upcoming Flight Sim Lock On: Modern Air Combat, the small trailer is available to download here and shows a carrier based landing, I guess the sort of thing which gets you hot if you are into that genre.

A couple of demos this week although only the single all-new one, that being the sizeable 207 MB demo for No Mans Land, an RTS game due out later this year which is set in America and deals with the large slice of history from the first Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century through to the post-independence exploitation of the Wild West during the 19th Century. Giving you the choice of playing a variety of "races" which featured during this large slice of history it looks like a comprehensive game, the demo itself features two missions and you can grab it here. Although taking a different track the upcoming FPS game Shanghai Dragon also sets itself in a historical period of note, in this game's case the time is 1937 as Japan invade China and a 275 MB updated demo (the original one came out a month or two ago) released this past week gives you a chance to play the game yourself, grab it here if you want to see if the "Arcadey" nature takes your fancy.

One of the biggest selling PC games of this year has been Championship Manager 4, the latest in the long-running series was met with a mixed response by fans of the game though due to the incredible number of bugs which the release version of the game came with, even a release-day patch coming nowhere near close enough to sorting the game out. That was back in late March and four months later we have the fifth patch released, the dubiously titled Enhancement Pack 5 allegedly the last bug fix for this version of the game with work likely to start soon on the seasonal update for the series, Championship Manager 03/04. Having played the game with the patch myself it does definitely improve things but the game remains a bit short of the classic it should be in my opinion, the patch available in a 14 MB light version (get it here) or with some updated-ish data in a more considerable 45 MB version (get it here).

Back to the carnage we all enjoy with a sizeable patch for Devastation, this much maligned game didn't get a great deal of support on release but the 100 MB update (available here) takes the game to version 390 and might go some way to fixing this as it resolve some international compatibility issues with online play, along with fixing other various problems which have become apparent with the game. Time will tell if the patch revives the title's popularity but one game with no such issues is Soldier of Fortune 2, the OSP mod for that being updated this week on our servers to Beta 0.3e and you can download it by simply connecting to one of our servers or by clicking here.

Other games to get an overhaul this week include Command & Conquer Generals, the 17 MB Version 1.06 patch (available here) for this game is generally concerned with correcting online play issues but might have some benefit for those of you who play the game purely against the CPU. By contrast the multiplayer aspect is what makes Laser Squad Nemesis work, this play-by-email game received a significant update this week with a 12 MB Version 2.12 patch (get it here) which includes loads of new graphics and gameplay tweaks, the game also going into retail later this year (pre-order it here) with three months of Subscription included in the on-the-shelves version.

Some new mod versions worthy of a mention as the final part of this section including one for BattleField 1942 called Home Front, an unlikely name for a mod which is Sci-Fi based and is planned to feature battles across a variety of planets using futuristic weaponry, you can get the early 74 MB version here. A more developed mod is The Specialists for Half-Life, this fast-paced trick-filled mod having echoes of films like Face-Off and The Matrix with a vast array of weapons and moves for players to pull off, the 120 MB Beta 2.0 available here. The versatility of the Half-Life engine is well documented and no mod shows this off better than International Soccer, the fairly small Beta 2 of this mod available for download here.

Special Offers
After a tremendously busy (and largely successful) Internet Shopping Day 2003 on Thursday things have settled down a bit on the shop site, however the bargains still keep coming with many new additions to our Sale range, with some existing games in the range also being further reduced. You can find the full all-formats list here, whilst the PC section is available here.
