GAME.NET News
Now that the dust is settling on another E3 our intrepid freeloader reporter Dave Evans has returned from his holiday in the sun and posted his thoughts on all the various games he got to see whilst he was out there which, given his fondness for booth babes, amounted to a surprising amount of titles. Reading through his report it seems as if there is certainly plenty for PC Gamers to look forward to this coming year, with hopefully GAME.NET being able to cater for your needs as far as the major multiplayer releases are concerned.
On to more pressing matters and this week sees the addition of a new weekly event in the shape of the Half-Life mod Natural Selection. This mod has a dedicated following and it is easy to see why, despite having slightly dated netcode Half-Life has been the basis for the most popular online FPS games to date and Natural Selection takes that on a stage with the introduction of an RTS element. This isn't unique in an explicitly FPS game as C&C Renegades tried to do the same thing not so long ago, however the consensus there was that it was poorly implemented and didn't really work, whereas with Natural Selection the reviews have so far been very positive indeed. More details about our weekly event are available below, whilst you can grab the latest version of the mod from our FTP, although it does come in at a hefty 91 MB.
On the services front the main news is that we have added Wolf Tactics to the Bookable & Clan Servers. This modification for id's World War 2 FPS game Return to Castle Wolfenstein is aimed at catering for the needs of those players who have enjoyed mods in the past such as TF, TFC, Q3F and UnF, further enhancing and diversifying the class-based approach to FPS play which has made RtCW the popular game it is. You can download Wolf Tactics from our FTP, it comes in at 85MB, whilst also on our FTP is the Cluster mod / map pack for Tribes 2 which has been added to all Bookables & Clan Servers. Towards the end of last week TTM 2003 v2.1 was also unleashed on our Bookables & Clan Servers, this popular match-mod for UT2K3 is a server-side utility so does not require a download.
It is also worth mentioning that earlier this week we carried out some hardware upgrades to our Clan Servers, this will allow us to further expand the services we offer and as such RavenShield should become available at some point next week, free of charge to existing Clan Server owners where appropriate.

Files and Patches
I covered most of the trailers to emerge from E3 in the previous newsletter, however since then a massive high-resolution version of the entire Half-Life 2 presentation has been made available on the internet, eventually find its way to our FTP. Weighing in at a monster 587 MB this is one for solely the BroadBanders amongst you, but having sat through it myself I would thoroughly recommend it as it further puts to shame any other FPS games which have, until this point at least, been vying for contention as "the next big thing". A reminder of course that you can already pre-order Half-Life 2 from the GAME shop here, the tentative release date being the end of September.
On the patches front there isn't much news to bring you this week as far as the online games go, although two recently released titles have had a freshener to fix some minor issues. First up is a patch for Enter the Matrix, like the movie the game has a few problems but fortunately for those of you who snapped up the PC version of the Matrix world Atari have been quick on the ball to sort these out, all be it mainly graphic & sound issues which are being dealt with in the 4.42 MB release available on our FTP. On a similar note, those of you who have purchased GTA: Vice City may have been experiencing some graphical corruption at times, if you have then fear not as a solution to your problem is available in a 2 MB patch that is on our FTP. Please note that you should only install this if you have been experiencing such issues, otherwise it may cause your version of the game to go a bit funky.
Two demos to bring you this week, the first being based on that ole bad-ass from the Eighties - RoboCop. Through a variety of awful sequels, and even worse TV movies, the RoboCop franchise has somehow kept going and has recently made its way back to the PC in the shape of a FPS game under the same name (what, no catchy subtitle ?). I remember a very long time ago playing a game that was loosely based on the third movie in the series, a pretty rudimentary FPS game it none the less was one of the better movie based games, all be it rather poor on the graphics, this new game aims to once more put you in Roby's titanium clad boots as you battle against global MegaCorps and drug lords in an effort to protect the innocent. Again. On the plus side the demo is a sprightly 25 MB and available on our FTP, if you like what you see you can order the full game by going here.
Special Offers
Starting things off on a space-based note, the powers that be wanted me to mention that GAME is, for at least the next two weeks, still the only place in the UK where you can get your hands on EVE Online and we've also now set up a forum for you to chew the cud with other GAME.NET users. On a similar theme our forum for Planetside is also filling up nicely, especially now that the game has finally gone live as of Thursday.
I mentioned last week that to celebrate the launch of Microsoft's Rise of Nations on PC today we have a competition for a chance to win an Alienware system worth nearly £4000, more of which you can read about here, the deadline isn't until next Friday so if you haven't entered yet (it is free to do so) then head to the page now and find out what you have to do to give yourself a chance of winning this very smart prize.
Our clearance sale has also been extended with titles such as Starfleet Command 3 for £14.99, or Project Earth for £9.99, plus amazingly we still have stock of Horse Racing Manager, my Game of 2003. Further details can be found here, the sale ends in the coming week.
That's it for this week from me, hopefully see you in the games at some point.
Regards,
Dave "BigFoot" Angus
