GAME.NET News
A busy week here at GAME HQ and the first thing to mention is our review of the brand spanking new Enter the Matrix game. Unless you have been living in an isolation tank for the past couple of weeks you will be aware that The Matrix Reloaded hits our cinema screens next Friday and, with the sort of timing only global megacorps can manage, the game that compliments the film has arrived to help hype up the movie which has been receiving mixed reviews over in the USA, although will doubtless still make oodles and oodles of cash. Reviewer CJRavey isn't totally bowled over by the game on its own merits but classes it as "must-have experience" for fans of the trilogy, you can read his full take on what is still one of the better film-based games by clicking here.
On the services front a couple of minor changes have taken place to our Bookable servers this past week, the anti-cheat software Half-Life Guard being re-enabled now that some issues with it have been tidied up following a sticky couple of days when the new Half-Life Dedicated Server was released. We've also added a No Rockets mod for Medal of Honor's expansion pack SpearHead, with hopefully further new mods to come in the next week, both these changes are server-side only so no need to bother downloading any patches. Also on the subject of the bookables, in the last couple of days both DesertCombat and RavenShield have been patched to the latest versions, of which more details can be found in the Files and Patches section below.
A bit of league news to bring you this week as our flagship Subscribers Only competition - The BarrysWorld Counter-Strike League - gears up for it's second season of play. Close on 60 clans are set to go head-to-head to battle it out across the ten week campaign for over £1,500 worth of prizes, defending champions Last Chance facing a number of new challengers in a packed Division 1 which features a number of the top UK based sides. Coverage of this league will be extensive with live Half-Life TV on every single match which takes place, it all kicks off this coming Tuesday and for more information check out the league website.
Finally I thought that some of you might like to hear about a chance to come work at GAME, although you will have to be quick as the deadline to apply is today (Friday). The vacancy is for a Designer role across the GAME websites and more details of what the job entails, along with how to apply, can be found in our forums.

Files and Patches
Two significant patches to mention which have come out in the last few days, the first is for the popular Battlefield 1942 mod Desert Combat, Version 0.35 comes in at a whopping great 187 MB and is available from our FTP, whilst this is mostly a tweak / bug fix version there are some new weapons appearing, including the anti-aircraft missiles. Next up for a patching is the popular Rainbow Six: RavenShield game, Tom Clancy's finest getting some minor changes which mostly relate to the online play of the game, no ASE support yet though, the relatively small 8 MB patch being available on our FTP.
Being an international playboy and sometime cyber-haxor Los Angeles is my second home and once a year it is also the host to the biggest computer gaming show on the planet, however for those of you not fortunate enough to have attended E3 (which stands for Electronic Entertainment Expo in case you wanted to be bored) the side benefit is that all the fancy trailers and demos which the various developers showcase at the event have a habit of making their way onto the net and some of them are lucky enough to even get as far as our hallowed FTP. GAME.NET is also fortunate to have two reporters who made the trip to the show and their reviews of the event can be read here and here, whilst a handy list of Pre-Order links for some of the main titles unveiled over the three days can be found here.
On the trailer front our stay-at-home news reporter Whipped has been busy piling on the files to bring you a selection of cinematic triumphs. First up is a stunning 31 MB hi-res trailer for DOOM III, then we have a slightly larger preview of Half-Life 2 which features some jaw-dropping graphics and highly detailed gameplay touches that made some of the GAME.NET staff go a bit gaga and start drooling like little babies. On a more consoley note there are also trailers for StarCraft Ghost (available on the Xbox, PS2 and GC), Halo 2 for the Xbox (complete with a soundtrack of journalists wetting their pants) and the quite far off Star Wars: Republic Commando and Metal Gear Solid 3, it being confirmed a few days ago that MGS 3 will be available on the PS2 only.
Prior to E3 starting the PC demo of upcoming multi-format game Hulk was released, weighing in at a truly Hulk-like 170 MB the 3rd person adventure puts you in the role of Bruce Banner / The Hulk as you use both personas to advance across the 30 or so levels, destroying everything in your path with the game featuring heavy influence from the film of the same name which is due for release in June / July, specifically the voice of the actor playing the characters in the film - Eric Bana. If you are a fan of the green and like what you see then you can pre-order your copy here.

Free Things Alert !!! To celebrate the launch of Microsoft's Rise of Nations on PC, due out next Friday, we have a competition for a chance to win an Alienware PC worth nearly £4000, more of which you can read about here. Most hard-core gamers recognise Alienware as one of the best pre-built PC brands around and the system up for grabs is certainly more than enough to satisfy the l33t h4x0r in you, to enter is easy (unless you can't read, in which case you are shafted, but on the bright side you wouldn't know about the competition anyway) and the deadline for getting your answer in isn't until the end of May.
Whilst not being free you can pick up a copy of the literary genius that is the Prima Official Guide to Unreal Tournament 2003 for just 99p, along with loads of other bargains, in our Clearance Sale which runs until the middle of next week. The Sale covers all major formats with big reductions on other PC titles such as Vietcong and my favourite game of the year so far - Horse Racing Manager.
That's it for this week from me, hopefully see you in the games at some point.
Regards,
Dave "BigFoot" Angus
