For those wondering how exactly this system works (spell resists being affected by the spell's level rather than purely by the caster's level) have a read of this, taken from last night's grab bag.

Q: Spell resists. Can you give me more details as to how the system works?

A: Here’s the answer, straight from the desk of the spell designer:

"Spells have a factor of (spell level / 2) added to their chance to hit. (Spell level defined as the level the spell is awarded, chance to hit defined as the chance of avoiding the "Your target resists the spell!" message.) Subtracted from the modified to-hit chance is the target's (level / 2). So a L50 caster casting a L30 spell at a L50 monster or player, they have a base chance of 85% to hit, plus 15%, minus 25% for a net chance to hit of 75%. If the chance to hit goes over 100% damage or duration is increased, and if it goes below 55%, you still have a 55% chance to hit but your damage or duration is penalized. If the chance to hit goes below 0, you cannot hit at all. Once the spell hits, damage and duration are further modified by resistances.

"In general, RvR is between opponents within 1 quanta of each other (in the frontiers for example, L45-50), and the spells cast are L40+. This results in a 2.5-5% modifier, which is somewhat lost in the noise of the bonuses from Int/Acuity, realm abilities, and modifiers from resistances. For characters using spells around L30, they will see a more significant reduction however, and this factor is part of it."

A few quick number crunches done here, taking the most common CC specs as an example.

L50 caster vs. L50 target

Sorceror : 34 mind : Shroud of Senility : 77%
Bard : 43 music : Captivate Legions : 81%
Bard : 47 music : Entrancing Harmony : 83%
Healer : 44 pacification : Tranquilize Area : 82%
Healer : 47 pacification : Pacifying Gaze : 83%

So yes, high mind is looking more and more like the only really decent mezzing spec in the future for sorcs. Kiss your nuking ability byebye :(

And those extra 5% is a huge difference?

Dont you think its silly(or was silly before determination and resists affecting CC) that if someone casted a mezz on you you had that low chance of resisting it?

Just pointing out the explanation of the situation, did the calculations just as a "FYI" really. Though yes tbh I think the 5-6% difference will add up over time, it always does. Bring on the 49 mind spec sorcs!

almost every nearsight in hib/mid is a level 26 spell, for example. also eld/ment's mezzes are generally around there or lower. proly loooads of other examples too

Ehm shouldn't you take the 44 mind ae mezz to compare it better? (47 in paci and that high in bard songs takes a lot of their points as well... For they are both the highest of their ae mezz..)

I use my level 39 mezz and my level 14 root.
Funny enough, I have never ever seen so many resists as after the patch, have noticed it in duels.

Question is if the resists where there before patch and I didnt notice them in the heat of battle and now I do in the duels.
Or, did mythic add the rules in the original post in this patch without notes.
I recall some grab bag saying spell level had no effect on resists - may be wrong here.

well most healers go 38 paci (thats teh line we get our CC from) so yes theres ppl using lvl 30 spells.
Oh well, happy i got a tank im getting to lvl 50, since aparently mythic dont want anything other hen melee in this game.

I think the spell lvl check was implemented in this patch, Odysseus, think I heard that somewhere. Can't say for certain though.

Hmm, so at the start Mythic said we shouldn't spec highly in one line and now they tell us this.....

Really annoying when you have built your spec in a 'balanced' way to access certain spells etc.

One thing I gleaned from the US boards is that in a full group of 8, spell resists drop which is no doubt why you'll see more resists duelling.

Now Mythic, let's have an explanation of how this affects Melee classes and what a caster can do to resist more :rolleyes:

annoyed, everyone resists my lvl 17 35sec mezz now :(

this has also killed the split spec mentalist, 35/36

There's nothing "future" about this. Was first detected in 1.50 and documented by many including the Mentalist TL, only took Mythic 4-5 months to respond, nothing unusual there tbh.

Is there any point in having +Casting skill items to get your skill above your level now?

Eg level 50 with 47 spec +3 items (to reduce variance) - beyond this point arent you just wasting your time now?

Also points from realm ranks are similarly junk :(

You will still add damage to nukes by speccing past 50. for a base 209 spell you add around 2 points of damage for every skill point above 50. But since you add about 1 point of damage for every int you get with bufs/items, its usually better going to max int before skill, provided skill is at least 50. (numbers used here arent the precise numbers, but good approximations).

I tested this in last patch, and havent checked if it is the same in 1.54, but I think so.

Skill above 50 comes into play when nuking mobs above level 50. Search for posts by Taldren the eld team lead on VN, but thats about the gist of it.

This has been in since an earlier patch...

I notice it a lot on my level 13 AE-Root, its almost useless (5 enemies that charge, 2 or 3 resists is still 2 or 3 enemies less on me, any bit helps ;))...

Its rediculous though, if you have an enormous amount of + in your skill (+14 for me in fire) I still get resisted as much as with 0 add to my fire skill (atleast using a 47 spell, so doesnt get resisted a lot)... Atleast it makes me nuke harder, must be a drag to have +mind and it actually does jack-all for duration/amount resisted...

This calculation could stay the same, but then it should take the amount of skill you have (for example, 34 mind +11 mind == 45 mind, is less resists)... Oohwell, not the first time Mythic screws up... (and then claim it 'works as intended')

in a duel last night a green druid pet resisted 2 mezzes (lvl 16ish spell) and a top stun, needless to say i died horribly :p

oh and skill lvl above 50 helps charmers on what lvl mob they can charm
