Can anyone recommend some good furniture for my new PC room (\o/) ?

I need a large-ish desk to accomodate 2 PCs and monitors and some kind of cupboard with LOADS of shelves for DVDs/games. Mrs Wij doesn't just want shelves cos she doesn't want them to be on display and would like to have a door on it.

Cheers,

Wij.

hmm, I'd install a wall-length bit of 1" thick mdf along a 2"x4" beam fixed to the wall in your poota room. leg supports every 6' or so depending on your wishes. drill a couple of 2" diameter holes at the back to gather cables and whatall.
as for the cupboard, IKEA is indeed your friend. I happen to know they do a rather handsome cherry-wood-esque laminiated finish. mine came with 4 doors and a roll-down thingy. ideal :)

I'll pass your idea to the Mrs-Wij-Furniture-Approval&Censorship-Dept to see if I can get it passed :)

Yeah making your own is the best thing. My dad bought one from Staples I think, needed extension cables for the mouse and kb to reach where the PC is and you need to take off most cables from the back of the PC just to get access to the back of it.

So pre-made = yuck

thing is, you'd better work out your fave desk height well in advance, because once you've installed it you're more or less there for life. I've never met Mrs Wij, but I hazard a guess that she won't be partial to neat lines of drill holes in the wall while the man of the house adjusts his desk ;)

edit: if you're *really* handy, you could fix it to slides in the wall and get height adjustable legs (IKEA sells those too heh). then you could fiddle the height within a margin of 3 or 4 inches. it could be a pain in the arse to do but quite cool if done well.

I have almost exactly that setup, except, we did it along the wall like you said, but brought 2 self assemby cupboards to use as supports, they're the under-worktop type without their feet on. They neetly devide the worktop into 3 box + leg holes, with plenty of storage space inbetween.
in addition, use "breakfast bars" not worktop as breakfast bars are deeper, so you have more room for monitor + keyboard + arm resting room :D

Will post a photo later if poss.

I got my desk from Ikea, huuuge mofo...you can add bits, so I bought a couple of the addons.

I've got room for two monitors, books, a TV, my DvD collection, and a space to work in.

I'd have to say Ikea is yer best bet. I got the "Galant" type.

Wij, this is what I got for my home :

minus the round thingy on the end.

You can get additional cupboards/shelves in the same style.

Build your own. After all, you're going to be spending a lot of time at it :p

nice one Tilda :) that's just about what I imagined. in a slight diff, I have a huge number of computers and parts, so I (personally) wouldn't want your under-desk cupboards inasmuch as I feel they'd take up too much space. I do like the idea though, I think I'd push them back against the wall and keep widely spaced legs as a main front support.

yeah its down to preferance I guess, we had the cupboards at the front so there was a gap for network cables and air circulation at the back. but its easy to change things around to create different types of storage etc :D

I went to Ikea too!

I bought a large tabletop (£35) and 4 legs (£10).
Afix brackets to bottom of tabletop, screw legs into brackets.

Ta da !

We did something very similair to the other DIY enthusiasts, except it was MFI not IKEA. Our computers are in the bedroom and when we had the wardrobes fitted we ordered an extra side panel, this is quite deep and fairly comfortable, supported it at the back with the window sill, and at the front with some silver legs, these may have been from IKEA. Storage is in one of the wardrobes that was not neded for clothes.

I wouldn't recommend putting the desk too close to a wall, its bad for the eyesight (unless the desk is 10 feet deep and the monitor 8 feet from the wall)
