Turning Messenger off in Outlook Express doesn't work. Whenever you open OE then Messenger loads - whether you want it to or not.

So - does anyone have an idea on how to remove this after M$'s "Critical" fix???

Why why why? I recommend (and so does bigbb now) Pegasus Mail. Eudora is pretty good too.

Nope, it's an "integral" part of the OS, unless you hack it out, which just makes things run faster. Until you install a security update, which just locks it in tighter. Then you are pretty much stuck.

Aye. XP Pro installs messenger by default.

To un-install it you go into c:\winnt\inf\sysoc.inf (or c:\windoze depending on how you've done yer install) and do a find and replace on the word "hide" - and replace it with nothing.

When you reboot and go into add/remove programs you can now Un-install messenger - it's no longer hidden.

However, M$ put out a "Critical Update" to XP, which I installed presuming that "Critical" meant something quite important.

All the "Critical" update does in integrate Messenger into Outlook Express in a way that it CAN'T be uninstalled

Good thing I didn't buy Pro (got a home licence tho). I'd be even more livid. (It's a company licence for the Pro).

Funny thing is, I make decisions on what software we roll out at our site (2000+ users). Every time M$ does something to piss me off they find that I go with the "alternate" option as opposed to the M$ package They've lost tens of millions of business because of that

Simple uninstall the 'MY Tomy' XP interface for win 2000, and install 2000 a fresh with the 'MY TOMY' interface removed, and MSN MESSENGER REMOVED

What is all this business? I have XP with all the updates and have never had Messenger pop up since I went into options and set the following:

There is a better way of removing messenger, and it's official too

Just run the following command from your start-menu

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

thought it might also be interesting to some people to give another chat client ago, this one is called trillian

it's basically many chat mediums rolled into one, and so far it does the job quiet nicely. to the current version as of this post, 0.725 ( even though it's been about for ages and hasn't made out of beta yet, it's still excellent & stable ) supports the following...

• IRC (yay)
• AOL (bah)
• ICQ (bah)
• MSN (bah)
• Yahoo! (bah)

plus it's skinnable for all you icq arses ( and dont give me crap about it being good for sending files )

be warned though, it can be a challenge to get working the way you expect

Yer I use this its very good.

It doesn't have most of the advanced features as the individual clients but it is better for me to have one for all.

On a side note I have yet to encounter a decent skin for Trillian

trillian working for 2000 ? yea, works for 9x, nt, 2k and xp afaik.
