Had a big lightning storm an hour ago, looks like my place got zapped as quite a few items that were plugged in got zapped. Sadly my ADSL2 router took a wallop and went up in smoke yet the microfilter survived. The oddest bit is that my Logitech G15 keyboard which was plugged in via USB is now dead but the PC seems to be ok. Surely if the keyboard got spiked then the PC and everything in it should have as well. Mystery.

Luckily I have an old modem spare so I will order a replacement router in a minute, going to have to torture the PC with some games after that to make sure nothing else hasn't been damaged to one degree or another.

Keep your fingers crossed for me, really can not afford to have to replace many parts at the moment.

BEst bet is to check with some program that your stuff is running still. Something sensor type, everest perhaps?

The keyboard probably fried because the usb ports aren't as protected as the rest(i'd assume).

Don't you have a surge-cable-thingy(you know the extension cord type that fries before stuff connected fries) between the wall and your computer?

that's what you get for having those big lightning conductors outside your house, I told you go on russian wife finder rather than trying to reanimate dead 'uns!!!

Yep I have a Belkin 8 way surge protector. I think the spike came in via the telehone wire, spiked the router and then jumped to the PC via the ethernet cable. That is why I am really worried about other damage, I know how static can cause damage that only shows itself intermittently and other electrical damage is sure to be the same if the voltage was low enough.

Just done a couple of warhammer scenarios with settings on max aa and all the shinies, ran just fine and no crashes. Will do a proper stress test later, so far the damage is G15 keyboard, Netgear wireless router and a Siemens duo digital cordless jobbie. :(

just be grateful you weren't wearing your copper suit of armour perched at the top of the lightning conductor trying to attract a mate

Ah yeah, that'd fry it :(

Wonder if there's a surgestopper for phone/etc lines. Has to be. To google!

or go wireless & steal bandwith off someone else

can't the average nerd with the right software hack a domestic wireless network inside 20 seconds these days?

We hade a lightning strike 30 meters from our house and the whole street hade problems with electrical gizmo's (VCR's (yes yes it whas a whiled back), TV's, you name it). My computer on the attic(sp?) died, even though it wasnt plugged in (well the power cable was) and whas 2 floors up (old PSU).

I learned the hard way that when old people tell you something (to unplug most of the stuff, don't call or answer calls, don't stand in front of a window etc) they are usually right.

Even if its all unplugged but its on ground level, it still can be put out of use and it doesnt even have to strike very near to you.

One of the tech guys in our workplace had his servers fried because the building department decided to run mega tests without telling him so he had no chance to prepare, oops.
