Okay this may seem a stupid question..

Is it possible to somehow "share" being the host of a FTP? So you can have two connections thus making the downloads quicker?

If not.. is there other programs which allow this (but I don't want p2p things like kazzar as I want this private file place.)

Have a hunt round for info about a program called WASTE by Justin Frankel. It was pulled by AOL who bought Nullsoft the company he works for. But its already everywhere now, and as everything Justin has wrote, it is one class piece of code. Basically its p2p but it sets up a private decentralized network and only people with access to your dig. sig can access that network. I've yet to play with it properly, but it would suit anyones filesharing needs, while keeping it to only individuals you want to know about it.

Ah I see. Ive also played with edonkey server, seems nice.

In theory as I see it... you could have a private server, still download from other servers, but keep your upload to your freinds on the server your connected to.

This would give normal edonkey speed plus all the upload of your friends which have a very small queue.
