Front Line Force 1.5 - and why you should try it.

For those of you that don't know Front Line Force is a modification for halflife which has just seen a new release in the form of version 1.5 which you can get here: http://www.flfmod.com/downloads.php

I'd explain what FLF involves but you'd do better to read this and the manual: http://www.flfmod.com/features.php http://www.flfmod.com/manual/index.php

Or even better if you've got the bandwith or the time have a gander at this:
http://www.tincan-drew.com/files/flfmovie.zip

It's a stonking movie of what FLF is like, unfortunately done before 1.5 was released so none of the fantastic new maps appear, but the basic principle is there. It's about 12mbs and about 4 mins long. The quality of the video doesn't show FLF's graphics which provide arguably the best visuals in any mod. (e.g. ripples on water when u fire at it, debris off walls, mouths move with voice comms, models blink their eyes, smoke puffs out the barrel of the guns etc )

There's currently a second season of the BW FLF league about to start which you can read about here: http://leagues.barrysworld.net/bwflfl/

I must stress though, FLF has realistic settings, guns and models but it is NOT a realism mod like CS and DoD, the damage system is set differently so you can take more hits than in realistic mods. This makes firefights much more interesting and works against camping as a strategy. Teamwork is esential and gives you lots of benefits, which you'll find out about if you look at the manual.
I'm not suggesting that you give up other mods to play FLF, but give it a go, you might like it, I did :D

If you need any more info feel free to drop into #frontline on quakenet or gamesnet and #bwflf or #byflf on quakenet, or email me mrflibble-bw@barrysworld.com

Anyways here's a few servers you might like to look at if you need ip's ( I recomend using the All Seeing Eye as a server broser for all games anyway)

BarrysWorld - Front Line Force (1)|23ms|213.221.174.40:27015
blueyonder Front Line Force #01 |23ms|62.30.30.152:27015
[MXR] @ FirstGAMESNeT FLF 1.5|19ms|212.103.233.35:27015
The Digital Graveyard FLF 1.5|21ms|212.103.233.36:27015

Hopefully I'll see a few of you on the servers :)

I liked it, but the 2 bw servers were always empty.

It was v hard to c ppl sometimes, and that put me off a little bit.

I tried it before. I found what always happened was some clanned players joined in, sided up together, and slaughtered all the new players, despite my endless cries for help. *shrugs*

my mate ash gave up cs for flf. he swore that 1.1 flf (i think), was the greatest multiplayer game ever. I tried at 1.2 and 1.3a but both were bug ridden and most of the players had seemed to leave.
Going to give 1.5 a go tonight.

Okay I'll try and adress all your posts:

MT: if you mean 1.5 then fine, that's your opinion and your intitled to it. If you mean anything before 1.3a I suggest you try again as it has changed rather a lot since then.

Tom: There's unfortunately only one BW server at the moment but it's generally got people on it now since 1.5 was released ( it was full for most of last night) If you have problems with the new models than you can get the old ones here http://www.tincan-drew.com/files/oldskins.zip (which are very easy to distinguish) there's a large green triangle over your teammates' heads anyways which rather helps ;)

Itchy: That doesn't happen much now and is very much shunned upon by the community. Also it won't happen any more as there is a variable mp_autoteambalance 2 which basically evens the teams based on points which prevents this now \0/

Lovedaddy: 1.2 was a shambles and 1.3a had a few bugs ( mainly a crashing one) which have been ironed out in 1.5. If you have any problems have a look here : http://www.frontlineforce.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?forumid=1

If that link is knackered just go here and then to the general and look at the 2 stickys: http://www.frontlineforce.com/forum/

Yeh, tried it but I found it annoying, repetitive, and I was shite at it too.

It simply takes getting used to. Dont get discouraged by getting killed by clan peeps. Gotta remember they been playing a hell of a lot longer. If you ever find stacked teams and want em bitchslapped , grab someone from #byflf #bwflf and #mxr covers the 4 servers mr flibble mentioned.

Dont give up just give it a go , once you get past the learning bit it gets easier :]

Evidentely not :D I actually sometimes get decent scores on CS, like this morning I got like 15/7 :D - and a few weeks ago I got 16/0 and everyone said I cheated :D

I played it recently, its not progressed much from when it was first launched. I prefer DoD anyways.

Er well unless you've played it since Saturday, you haven't played the newest version which is quite a bit different. FLF isn't really comparable to DoD ( except that DoD tried to implement a capture system but it's nowhere near as good as the one in FLF), it's really just an alternative. I like to play DoD too but it annoys me a lot and I prefer FLF by far.

TBH I always found the maps a bit difficult to navigate. The great thing about cs is that most of the maps are actually very simple in layout, and quite easy to learn. The maps on flf allowed me to be shot from apparantly nowhere, and that I think is what put me off playing it anymore.

I wonder what it would be like on cs maps?

oh pish the maps are easy plus atm there are a lot of new maps so a lot of the time we are all in the same situation. There is a radar which has cap point locations , you can also press b which brings up a cap point status thingy , its really straightforward :]

If you ever wanna have a run around some maps and wanna know where the cap points are come grab me in #bwflf :]

Yep, some of the maps require learning, but it only takes like one 20 minute game on them to learn it (I know because I just did it on 3 new maps that I hadn't played before). Personally I like that in preference to the near linear CS maps.

BTW flf_ascension is a cs map converted, so go play that :p

Is there a stamina thing involved with flf?

yeah it only affects jumping. The more you jump the less stamina you have , the less you have the less you can jump , but you can get a good few jumps before you need to stop for a bit - stop jumping that is not moving :]

I'm always up for trying a new HL mod, getting a bit bored of the campers on DoD so i gave it a go. Alls i can say is wow! Thankyou very much Mr Flibble and Hot Soup for bringing this gem to my attention. The fast pace of the game took a bit of getting used compared to DoD but i was able to port some of my Thompson whoring skillz over and started to really enjoy it! I even managed to find and cap a couple of points :) The teamwork element is smart as well, i was capping a point, turned around and there was 2 of my teammates covering me! I don't see that level of teamwork and co-operation much on the DoD pub servers..

I'm sold :D

yep it certainly is down at the moment. Natrat has some theory that the FLF server is "killing the box" whatever that means and so has taken it off to establish if this is the case, and fix it if so.

Hopefully it'll be back up soon ( as it was full again last night :D)

All the other servers I gave details of are still up :)

I've been playing it the last few days, and just cannot seem to get to grips with it. Firstly, all the guns seem to lack stopping power and mass. (for want of a better description)
Players dont seem to animate and run about the map, but rather slide and warp about the place. Example, a person is at the end of a hallway, rather than run to the other side, giving you time to track them, they just seem to appear at the other side. Maybe this is just me, but other games with high movement speeds dont seem to look as bad.

Do bullets bounce off walls, and how easy do they go through walls, cos thats another thing im having trouble getting used to.
