Freeview

Not exactly computer related but pretty close. Was reading on the site that it's 20 extra channels for a one-off payment of £100 for the box. I don't watch an awful lot of TV but it'd be nice to have a bit more choice when I do, and because I live in a converted office block apartment place I can't get cable or put up a dish.

Does anyone know if it's worth getting? And if so what sort of box I need for setting it up?

They had links to various manufacturers on the freeview webby and I found this but it doesn't say anything about freeview, and I don't really have a clue what I'm looking for. So... help! :)

I've got one of the old itv digital boxes, if you can get one of them second hand you'll have all you need, if not virtually any electrical retailer will sell you a box for it, they are normally Nokia and last for ages.

I got a Panasonic one (Comet £99) and its pretty good nice clear picture, the only problem here is that our arieal is a bit dodgy so I get some picture break up on some channels, if your after great TV there is not much there you have BBC3 and BBC4 then you have BBC News24 and SkyNews and two music channels playing mostly pop music.

Those 8 BBC Chanels are:

BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, BBC News24, BBC Parliament, CBeebies, CBBC

But there will be more channels eventually and you get more interactivity than ntl:

my gran has a freeview box. gives her a few news channels, itv 2 and the extra bbc channels as well as some digital radio thingies. my uncle said that all u need to do is plug a normal arial into it and u get these programs and stuff and that all these different boxes do the same thing basically or summat.

i would get one if the fucking arial worked where i lived :/

thats why we got cable. to get clear 1-5 channels :)

IM NOT HELP. SHOOT ME.

Hi .Cask

Not that this realy adds anything, but as people have being saying, if you have a good roof-top ariel then it's probably worth splashing out (the Freeview website has all the information you need with regards reception etc). As there's no contract or subscription, so you're not tied down, thus you could always switch to Sky or ntl (etc) should you choose to do so.

The set-top boxes themselves seem to be all fairly similar. I believe Nokia's Mediamaster even has a few games like Snake integrated :D

Kind Regards

Thanks for that. Looks like I'll be shopping for it old style, if my muscles haven't withered away so that I can't carry it back from the shop :(
