 At last an elite 'em up game with a dedicated server ( see http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories/news/0,10870,2911306,00.html )

Just wondering if BW had any plans to run this (subs only plse thx ;)) and if so can I ask that U pleeeeease investigate replicating users persistent characters across multiple servers (as I don't wanna build up a char on one server and then not be able to access him cos the servers full all the time :)

...course this is all assuming that the server software doesnt need a bleedin 3D card or insist on being the only application running on the box or any of the other well researched, informed and plain sensible options that a lot of non ID developers seem to opt for.

Hehe. I was going to start a thread about this. :D

A BW Freelancer server would make me weep, I'm sure. The need for a persistant server means that I would very likely only play Freelancer if BW hosted a server. It's my home.

Get to work, lads ta.

Greetings Everyone,

Just wanted to let you all know that we will be awarding each of you (the 30 contest winners) a full retail version of the game to make up for the shipping problems we experienced with the betas.

So, cancel any pre-order deals you might have going, since we'll be sending you a boxed copy as soon as it arrives here on the Microsoft Campus. I'll send everyone mail again when we start shipping these out.

Thanks again for being a valued member of the Freelancer community and we sincerely hope you enjoy your time amongst the stars.

Best regards,
Bradley
Microsoft Game Studios Web Team

Thanks MS

Starman reckons the game supports 128 plyrs so 2 or more servers may not be necessary (we can but hope).

U BW server type lads will be pleased to hear that it has a nice shiney GUI on the front as well ;)

Played the demo at last ....can't decide if I like it yet tbh.
Theres a lot I dont like I have to say.

I'm a great one for immersive games and for me personally in a space sim third person and liberal loading screens don't equal immersive.

The planetside stuff is as lame as I expected... theres no seamless planetary transitions, its all about the cutscenes baby.

Theres a bunch of other stuff that I wont dribble on about here but needless to say I remain to be convinced about it.
The multiplayer might still be a giggle but my first impression is that its not very sophisticated ...if youre looking for elite then Free[loading screen]Lancer isnt it thats for sure.

I am left wondering "wtf have they been doing for 4 years?" but it is only the demo I guess (he says ...trying to look for a silver lining)

If we can run it, we will. I'd say there's a good chance of it happening as it's got a few of us hooked :) We're already racking our brains to see if theres any way we can use a single user base across multiple servers.

As for the player limit, you may be able to set the player limit to 128 but from our observations of CPU use you're gonna need a stonker to run anywhere near that!

I have an old 48k Spectrum in the cupboard. That should be enough, surely :)

Yip, server does support 128 players, and both PvP and non-PvP settings.

And yes, the server itself does seem a bit heavy on the CPU requirements, but it is running a massive 'universe' with thousand of ships in it. Whether the server only spawns 'mobs' when a player is in range, or if they spawn them full-time, I'm not sure, though the first method would cut down on the work the server needs to be done.

As for a BW server, hell yeah!

Though replicating the profiles across multiple servers might be a bit hard, the server doesn't seem to be too advanced and I can't see a method to allow replication to happen in real-time.

Maybe have one server for PvP, and one server for non-PvP. Or depending on the popularity, a few of each.

Needless to say, I have this pre-ordered :)

I pre-orderred mine today. Got directed to the demo yesterday and played it a bit. I like it, and the idea of joining up with others and making "pirates" or "navy" squads is gonna be fun.

Yip, it's a very good game :)

Have a LAN this weekend, and those I play with are gonne be there, gonna try to take on the upper Nomad system, the lower one just wasn't hard enough :)

Nice ship layout though:

Titan, level 10 shields, with 4 Nomad Cannons and a Cannonball and Lancer missile launcher. Just looking for some new shield weapons :) 736 Kills, more credits than I can jettison, and a kickass group ready for when BW gets some Freelancer servers up and running ;)
