Thanks to el Reg for advertising this little gem from Microsoft. They're distributing a free Windows Update CD which you can get here. It's only current up to October 2003 but if, like me, you've got lots of friends & relatives who are still on dialups then it could save an eternity of downloading 98/2000/XP critical updates & service packs. Apparently they're also sending out a CD with it with free trials of firewall & AV software.

And yes, obviously this is open to all the predictable "blah blah micro$oft sux0rs cos a proper OS wouldn't even need a cd's worth of security patching". If you feel the urge to make such a post then don't bother, we've all heard it all before and besides, as the article points out you'd want 550mb of updates for a linux install as opposed to 102mb for XP... nobody is immune from this problem :)

I downloaded SP4 from somewhere, and put it on CD for myself. Does that count? But yeh, saves a lot of that patching when you first install.

I don't care what my computer runs on, so long as its easy to use, colourful, quick, and plays games.

daoc can be run on linux if you put some work to it :p. Off course that is sort of the rule with linux for everything. It is usually always abit harder to get something to work on linux (talking about hardware mostly) than on windows as finding needed drivers can be harder and you need to know which linux shells to get as some are useless:p.

Also you might not actually know if your pc isnt having any problem if you dont have those updates installed, same with virus scanner. If you dont update that you might not actually realize you have a virus on your pc that is until it is really to late.

It's people with this self-assured attitude that are the reason there are so many mass-mailing worms flying around the Internet, slowing down my pr0n surfing :p

Mine arrived yesterday too :) Not looked at it, no idea what's on it... although I seem to remember the Reg said it was all critical updates up to October 2003 or something.

OK, so it has SP1 and all the updates to February 2004 (although no SP1a, which is curious)

Also has some firewall software for trial on a separate CD.

Yay MS :)
