Thanks to el Reg for advertising this little gem from Microsoft. They're distributing a free Windows Update CD which you can get here. It's only current up to October 2003 but if, like me, you've got lots of friends & relatives who are still on dialups then it could save an eternity of downloading 98/2000/XP critical updates & service packs. Apparently they're also sending out a CD with it with free trials of firewall & AV software.
And yes, obviously this is open to all the predictable "blah blah micro$oft sux0rs cos a proper OS wouldn't even need a cd's worth of security patching". If you feel the urge to make such a post then don't bother, we've all heard it all before and besides, as the article points out you'd want 550mb of updates for a linux install as opposed to 102mb for XP... nobody is immune from this problem
