does everyones fps drop to 1 in busy cities?
out of cities i get 30 fps which is pretty shite aswell.

my spec is: athlon 2700+, 512 pc2700 ddr ram, radeon 9600 pro 128 mb - i also have a 8mb cache HD (not sure if this affects fps but it goes into overtime when in cities).

will upping my ram to 1 gig help? i guess it must but can any1 confirm? when they said you need a monster computer for this game, they weren't joking.

thxbb.

don't believe the fps monitor..i ran fraps over the top of it and outside cities i was on 50+ with all the fruit...seems to cap itself out at 29 or 30

also even if it says 30 if ur an avid fps player you can 'feel' its more than 30.

www.fraps.com theres a free one that does fps overlay...bright yellow and very annoying but good none the less

my fps never goes above 29, an im sure i read somewhere that its capped at 30.

In the larger citys i get a massive pause and it grinds to 1-2fps for a while then settles on about 15-20.

Try typing /flushg fullreset

it makes you pause for a while but then everythign runs a bit smoother

For some reason the FPS monitor is capped at 30. I reckon extra RAM will help (it's helped in every MMOG I've ever played and is often the big factor). I have a less powerful spec than you, but have 1GB RAM - I haven't had any major problems with frame rate in cities (though I do if I whack all gfx options up).

oustide cities 25-29.. at cities at theed or coronet i freeze up a few times. and then usually go to 10-15 steady fps.

specs are:
amd 2200 ati 9100 and 512 mb ram.. so noting really shocking.
I do have to say i run the game in poorly detaills.. as i do with most games. performance over good looking graphics for me :)

Extra RAM helps loads :)

Until Sunday I was running with 512Mb, and was getting the 1fps in towns.

Upgraded to 768Mb (replaced a 256 with 512) and I hardly notice the difference being in town now :D (A slight slow down when you first get there)

Looking at the memory used by my system only uses around 760Mb when playing, although I run little else while playing.

1.5 gig ddr 333, and 15+ in bestine busy time, sometimes it goes temp to 5-6 but when loaded, all fine again.

but that server lag, bah

I'm running an athlon 3200+ , ati rad 9800 Pro 256 mb and 1 gb ram - no slow-ups for me at all.

So it will be a combination of ram and vid mem i would think.

Yeah more RAM the better, the game is like a fat kid in a sweet store when it comes to your RAM.

Hear hear!

The fps slowdowns annoyed me so much I ordered an extra stick of nice kingston 333 so I now have 1gig ram and I can tell you its the best money I ever spend. It's a world of difference really and alt + tabbing is instant as well.

SWG will find your systems weakest spot and run according to that. You don't wanna compromise when it comes to ram, it will be your bottleneck :)

I found going from 512mb to 1gb ram made a huge difference yeah.

Also turn on the "use low detail characters at distance" and the "turn on character LOD manager" options - most of the fps crash in cities is cos of player characters and those make a huge diff.

The other sliders that make a massive fps difference are shadows (non-pc ones) and terrain detail.

Apparently the human eye can only register 25 fps, maybe thats why the monitors capped at 30.

Completely untrue I'm afraid.

Test 1: Set your monitor to 25 Hz refresh rate. That's refreshing at 25 fps. Painful isn't it? Now set it to 60 Hz. Big, big difference.

Test 2: Load up Quake 3. Adjust the graphics settings untill you get a nice 60+ fps (not hard with today's pc's). Fire a few rockets off or something. Now set cl_maxfps to 25. Fire a few rockets or something. Big, BIG BIG difference.

I have no idea if the SWG framerate is really capped at 29 fps or not but I have to say that a lot of the time it certainly *feels* higher than that so yes, maybe the fps meter in it is just broken.

I'm only quoting what a uni lecturer in visual images once said - I suspect there will be truth in it somewhere, but it did surprise me at the time. With respect to quake, one explanation could be the fact that server/client side updates are linked to FPS. I used to notice particularly in counter-strike that its far easier for a burst of fire to kill with high fps than it is with low.

Actually, more info is coming back from that drunken haze, iirc you need at least 25fps for smooth movement, but we're not capped at 25fps.

If anyones interested I had a quick gander on google and found this :D :
http://amo.net/NT/05-24-01FPS.html

Sad I know :p

Television and movies only show approx 24 fps and that is enough to simulate smooth animation. However, that is only the case because the images are not sharp images - they contain motion blur (as the camera is recording at 24fps) which provides additional cues for the eye to pick up movement. Freeze frame a DVD on a frame which includes a lot of movement and you can see that the individual recorded frames contain motion blur - they are not perfectly sharp.

When presented with sharp images (e.g. that are produced by games) the eye can distinguish more detail in each image and there aren't the same cues to simulate movement so the images appear to stutter. A single point in one frame will jump to its position in the next frame without any additional cues for the eye.

It is, as for why i have no idea.

If you search the forums you can probably find how to turn the cap off.

Actually thats a point, for most FPS games theres usually a console command like MAX_FPS which lets you twiddle, I dunno if they cap at 30 by default though too. I wonder if 30 is a gaming default and if you want it higher you have to set it manually?

yep, an extra stick of 512 has done the trick. i would reccomend that you dont consider this game without 1Gb ram.
