Bootup with the win98 cd (or a 98 setup bootdisc if you can't boot from cds)

One of the options when you enter setup is to format your HD. Use that then carry on installing.

Personally I would use a Win 98 bootable floppy .

When you get to the a: prompt type " format c: " and then install '98 onto the freshly formatted drive.

Before doing this though, is it worth investigating the cause of your numerous crashing problems? XP pro is far superior to 98 in many ways, and although 98 may run nicley to start with, over time it will get slower and slower.

Hello

Just a couple of things, really, since both Scobba and Wilier hit the nail on the head :) Firstly, if you're installing Windows 98 from scratch, you'll need the full version on CD. The upgrade version will only work if you have a full copy of Windows 95 lying around, as I recall (you'll be prompted for the CD part way through the installation).

Secondly, and this just repeats Wilier's point, I'd try and track down your Windows XP Pro problem(s). XP really is far superior and stabler than 98. Unless it's something to do with your computer's hardware (XP is somewhat of a beast in its requirements), I'd really suggest just sticking with it. That said, I have heard of people having problems when using the upgrade procedure from Windows 98 to XP. If you have a full copy of XP Pro, then I'd suggest formatting your hard drive as planned and installing it afresh and just see how you get on.

Kind Regards

This is correct, as I have done this numerous times, having upgraded from 95 to 98SE myself, on several machines ;)

I agree with Jonty, you'd be better off trying to correct the XP problems as I'd also admit it is a far superior OS to 98SE.

Have you actually tried a "re-install", which doesn't actually wipe your setup, I did this last night for a mobo upgrade and it was fairly successful.

Indeed lets try to sort your XP out between us. I have XP pro running smoothly on a celery 333 with 128 MB of RAM and using a Voodoo 4. It never crashes and is on 24/7. 98 is a bodgeup of an Operating System. I would suggest that if you have upgraded to XP from 98 that will be the root of your problem.
