but as it was mentioned in a different thread....can someone please explain to me why new movie release dates aren't in sync worldwide? I mean...it's like cutting the nose to spite the face isn't it?
a: It's so they can budget advertising and schedule star "openings" more effectively if they can see how much business is done in one territory. So if a movie bombs in the U.S. they just put it straight to video in other territories (Swept Away anyone?) and save on potential losses. This is why blockbusters are already more closely synched as they can reliably predict returns from X_MEN 2, MATRIX etc.
b: Movie prints are very expensive to produce for the cinemas so most of the ones we see are second-hand when Uncle Sam has dne with them. This will change as digital cinemas evolve and the raw cost of the projector film is removed.
Of course when (not if) the costs of piracy outweigh the potential losses due to advertising crap films then dates will come more in line.
